So which one is it? If price were no factor, which would be the:
most reliable, fastest, most options, most compatible, most formats, longest-lasting, best support, etc.??
I was really wanting to get a Plextor PX-716AL slot loading drive, but since they seem like they're never actually going to be coming to retailers, I'm looking for something else.
(maybe the PX-740A??)

most compatible, longest-lasting, best support and reliable would be the pioneer DVR-S201 version 2 hands down .... nothing else comes close ...
Not very fast though ...

There is no 'best'. There is only what is 'best' for you.
Define what you want to do, how complex you want things to be, how much you are willing to spend and how much effort you are willing to put into this and maybe someone can offer a few suggestions. But even so, there is no 'best'. If there was, all the others would be out of business!Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

i would just get a couple of BenQ DW1640 or DW162x
-- you can't go wrong with those ... just dont use them to burn at 16x IMO (or any burner right now) 4X is fine ... 8X if you are just checking or quick burn required .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -

Really, I just want a really fully-featured, very compatible and solid, reliable burner. I have had VERY good experience with Plextor CD burners, and that's why i was kinda thinking the PX-740A. -
yes the plextors are very good

Computergeeks.com has the 1620 OEM on sale during their moonlight madness sales and green light specials. Newegg.com has the drive in stock as well. The prices have fallen because the BENQ 1640 will soon be released in the USA.
I'm getting a bit tired of that PLEXTOR 716AL drive being pushed back every month. I saw the same thing that you did at mwave.com's site. Between the BENQ 1640 & PLEXTOR 716AL depending which drive is the first to be released in the USA will be my next purchase.
Best Buy finally opens up next Friday here in Honolulu, Hawaii. The wait is over. -
I would get the Pioneer 109 burners. Then get some good media.

I have used/owned Pioneer, LiteOn, and Plaxtor burners. I still like
the Plaxtor better. Although the other two are OK. I also heard Pioneer
is better on -R. I used +R most of the time. -
I've owned LiteOn, Sony and Plextor DVD burners. The Plextor is by far the best of what I've owned in every aspect - features, functionality, noise level.
Whatever you go with, make sure it has the features you want (like a drive that supports bitsetting). If nothing else, check out the software packages that come with it, maybe that'll lean you one way.
