  1. I convert AVI to SVCD using TMPGEnc Plus (Virtualdubmod for audio).

After about 50 movies, I've run into a problem with 30fps. I converted the movie, and burned the SVCD, but the video is choppy. I went back and checked the source and found that the AVI itself is choppy. The video info: 503 MB, 868 Kbps, 30.0 fps, 720*432 (16:9), DIV3 = DivX v3 MPEG-4 (Low-Motion), Supported (from AVICodec).

What can I do? Am I missing a codec? Can I convert 30fps to 29.97fps and use the NTSC setting in TMPGEnc?

I tried to find an answer on the website, but I can't seem to come up with one.

    Garbage in = Garbage out

If your avi is choppy to begin with then you need to find an avi that isn't. You could possibbly do some filtering with avisynth but I doubt it would make any difference.

Movies should be 24fps not 30fps. Try converting to 29.97fps with TMPEnc set to interlace instead of non-interlace. That will produce a 60Hz video with fewer motion artefacts.

  4. I agree with the garbage in = garbage out idea; usually if my avi is crap then I discard and try again.

In this case, because the choppiness is so uniform (every 1/2 second) I thought the problem might be codec related, or something I don't know.

I tried converting to 29.97fps with Interlace, but it didn't work. Could it possibly be codec related, or is it as simple as bad avi = bad svcd?

  5. It's probably as simple as the idiot that created it should have IVTC'd it but didn't. What happens when you open it in VDubMod and advance a frame at a time? Do you see any kind of a pattern?

And as stated, I don't know what makes you think that by converting it to SVCD that the choppiness is magically going to disappear.

  6. I agree with everyone - I think the avi was done poorly, and so it's been scrapped. I have gotten over the pain of defeat.

However, I didn't think SVCD conversion would 'magically' fix problems. As I've stated twice before, and now for what is a painfully yet apparently necessary third time, I thought perhaps it was a CODEC thing and not an avi problem.

Thanks for the useful advice ...
