I wasn't sure where to post this so I hope this is ok...

My cousin is having problems backing up his DVDs... We are both using the same programs but he is having no luck...

He has a system as follows...

An AMD Athlon XP2100+ with 128MB memory with 8MB shared for onboard video... A LG GWA-4161B DVD Burner...

We both use Elby CloneDVD2 v2.5.4.3 and AnyDVD v4.3.0.1 to back up the DVDs then use DVD Decrypter v3.5.1.0 to burn them...

But he's having major problems... I've tried everything I know but have had no success... He got 1 Memorex 16x DVD to burn properly but 7 failed... Then a Memorex 4X burned properly... I tried a TDK 8X and it failed... All these discs were DVD+R... I've had no problems with these same DVDs...

DVD Decrypter goes through the burning process and says 100% finished but never goes to the Syncronizing Disc portion... Then is just sits there... He's left it for over 3 hours on a disc or 2 to see if it finished but never did...

This has stumped me completely... Any help would be greatly appreciated...

    Thanks in advance...

  2. The version of DVDdecrypter you are using isn't the latest version.
Upgrade to the latest version which is 3.5.4.0 and give that a try.
Also is the DVD writer firmware up to date ? If not update the firmware because the firmware will give better compatabiltity with a wider range of media.

  3. the memory is poor for starters,he needs more.
what size is his hard drive,is it nearly full-has it been defragged lately, that causes problems-not defragging is bad for copying dvds.
    whats his OS,xp,98,me.?
is it the latest version of the programmes(i see they are not),or is the burner firmware up to date
it could be 1 thing or a multitude of things

  4. RottenFoxBreath is correct, if he's running XP then 128mb of Ram is way to low.
I would recommend a minimum of 512mb for XP especially with regard to burning DVD's.
How do your cousin's PC specs compare to yours ??

With regard to the hard drive issue, I dont believe that will be a major factor although it may have some bearing on the problem.
I say it wont be a major factor because I never defrag my hard drive partitions which I store my DVD files/images on and it has never given me any problems, but defragging is still something worth considering.
I am constantly deleting and storing DVD files on my partitions and have suffered no ill effects through lack of defragging !
But maybe I'm just lucky ?

Man you people are fast... lol

Yea... I thought about the RAM issue... He's using XP Pro and I think I read somehwere that 256MB is Min Req...

He's running 2 80GB HDs... And the firmware is the latest that I could find... No updates for that drive that I can see but I'll search more...

HARRYSPADGE... I run an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ with 512MB Ram... I guess he just needs more memory...

Thanks to the replies... I'll relay to him and try the RAM thing...

    Much appreciated...

  6. i was really referring to the fact of a near full drive or a seriously undefragged partition.
i myself have suffered that way back in the day, lol, but not recently as i too am constantly adding removing iso images, and files,so the hard drive is very rarely near to capacity-i still freak out when i get down to my last 10gig.thats my cutoff, and burn point.

EDIT: it may be that the system is choking on 128meg of ram,and 2 80 gig hard drives,is overkill i think, until the ram stuation is at least 512meg.
so he may be burning faster than his pc can keep up with, what with buffers, caching of files, etc.
could also be a cable/IDE flaw, get him to check his IDE settings are DMA,or Ultra DMA,and not PIO-which is bad.
