  1. I have a batch of TY 8x DVD-R, shiny silver tops. Nero never reports problems with any of them, once they've started*

However, every now and then i'll get a disk that will freeze up during the movie. Upon further inspection of the disk it looks like the burner missed a strip of the disk, very thin.

I burn the 8x disks at 12x sometimes, but haven't looked into it enough to find a pattern, because some of the 12x burns work fine, others don't.

I have an NEC 3520. You think it's just that i'm tyring to burn faster than spec?

    Anyone else have the problem?

*Sometimes at 12x before Nero will burn i get a "Power Calibration Error".

  2. I'm using 16x TY -Rs and I'm having problems with the leadin in Nero. It goes slow writing the leadin and then writes fine, but on playback it skips through the first 30 seconds of the disc. Thats the only -Rs I've tried on my 3520 so far. I've had nothing but good results using +R media on it. I still think NEC is far better with +R Media than it is with -R. I know a few people with the same kind of issues using quality -R media on it, where similar +R media works just fine with no errors and excellent scans. Could be a fluke though. Try burning it from an image file in DVD Decrypter. I did that and didn't get the leadin problem I was having with Nero. Quality was still lower than my Pioneer 109 burns on the same media though.

Use DVDDecrypter to burn as I have found it is much more reliable than Nero for burning DVD.
Also, for 8x DVD media I always burn at 4x ,it takes longer but you can be sure that it will be a better burn with less errors.

The problem is nero, it isn't that great of a burning program. Try using decrypter or buying copytodvd.

here lately i've had the same problem with a 'strip' in the middle of the disc. it also looks like a 'burn spot' where it starts. tried 3 different kinds of media. i found 1 other thread describing the same problem but there was no resolution.
i've resorted to slowing down the burn speed, and all seems to be okay. what really sucks is my problems always arise after i upgrade the burner's firmware. every upgrade makes it more sensitive and unreliable, go figure.... (sony dru-530a)
