I'm wanting to put the live webcast of my uni honours from leeds onto dvd, the leeds uni website still has it to view, but if i click the link it opens up in windows media player where there seems to be no way to save what you are watching onto your hard drive. I've tried copying the link and openign it in real player, but again no option to save. What software do i need so i can record this file from the net, or if i watch it in windows media does that mean the entire thing will be cached onto my hard drive somewhere? If so where would it put this file? any help much appreciated!!!

    Hi everglade,

As it's streaming video, it may well be WMV format - it could be tohers, like Real Media (RM). If so, try right-clicking on the link and trying to save the file.

If it is WMV, and you can get it on to your PC, opening it will still cause the video to be streamed rather than be actually on the PC.

You'll then need something like Stoik Video Converter - use the WMV file as the source, and convert either to WMV (but this time as a file that actually has the video on your PC) or a different format - like DV AVI or similar.

There are other tools for WMV and other formats - have a look around in the "Tools" section under "Video Streaming Recording".

You'll then need to figure out how to convert (encode) your file to MPEG2 ready for authoring to DVD.

At all times, pay attention to the bitrates and quality of your settings - doing it right, you can end up with a DVD that looks pretty close to what you see from their website. But never better.

    Congrats on getting your honours.

Right clikcing just gives Save Target, Open Target, Open Link, Save Link, etc. The save or open file option isnt there. I can play it in most players, but have no idea how to get the file onto my pc or to actually record it whilst its playing. Any other ideas?

all Save Target does is save a shortcut to the file on your PC in txt format. You dont have the file on your PC still and when you click the shortcut it still opens up in media player. So thats doesnt help at all. Any other ideas anyone?

Can't you just copy the link and add it in streamdown or something! With that program you can download streaming video to your hard drive!

I went to the site you gave, chose the, "Joint Honours Modern Languages" video, Windows Media Player identified it as, 'default(1).asx', I found it in my Temporary Internet Files, I opened it with Notepad, and found the proper link to the file, 'mms://iss-video.leeds.ac.uk/Ceremony 1 July 2005 High.wmv', I loaded this link into a program (freeware) called SDP, let it do it's magic, and now the full, watchable clip is on my hard drive. Sometimes you gotta, "jump through hoops" for this stuff. Hope this helps.

With myself being "down under" (Australia), is there any conceivable way I could possibly know a username and password for an English university server ?

In other words, No. Just put in that URL.

    If in doubt, Google it.
