I got NERO because I thought I could easily backup my DVDs. However, I just tried and am getting an error saying I cannot use DVD Copy because the DVD is protected.

Any way to bypass this message?

    Thanks from a newbie!

  2. Try DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter if it is already the right size.
This plan is so bad, it must be one of ours.

Nero does NOT remove ANY copy protection. That would be ilegal right? Remember that Nero is a comercial product so even though they now sell Recode ( shrink in disguise ) they had to remove the CSS decription from it.

The easiest and most consistant methods seem to revolve around using DVD Decrypter to read to iso and burn iso to DVD with DVD Decripter for all DVD5 to single layer and DVD9 copies to Dual Layer. If you want to re-author/movie only or other comppilation of the DVD then use DVD Shrink to ISO and automatically burn with DVD Decripter. You can also set it to use Nero to burn if you prefer but I think DVD Shrink would have to create regular files as opposed to an ISO image. I do all my DVD with the Decripter or Shrink to ISO and always burn with Decripter. I load my original DVD on my reader and the blank single layer or dual layer on my burner and once I tell DVD shrink or Decrypter what to do, I walk away and can be 100% assured it will work. I have to use AnyDVD sometimes with Sony protected releases.

Unless you plan to burn to dual layer disc, you need to ensure the dvd is under 4.37GB. If not, in which case you'll need to compess it using dvd shrink.

Correct. You can not legally make a back up copy of any media you own or rent, unless it's unprotected and clearly states that copying is permitted.

Breaking the copy protection to do so is a violation of the law and depending on where you live, it maybe a violation of several laws. You can be fined, jailed, or both for reverse engineering a copy protection system. Simply downloading any of the listed software links above makes yourself available to criminal prosecution.

Using Nero Burning ROM 6, click on the Recorder menu, then click on Burn Image File. On the file selection panel, change the file type to ISO and click your file.

You don't need any link for that. It's really too simple.

Rip your DVD to an Image file.

Open Nero and close that silly wizard that pops up.

Open the "Recorder" tab and choose "Burn Image"

Locate the file and click "Open" then Burn

    That's it

If you are copying your own DVDs for which you applied copy protection to then you have the keys available locally to make your copies and therefore will not need the advice of people here on how to violate the law and bypass copy protection.

Why do you think I posted in the first place ROF?

Probably because I couldn't understand why I was getting the message since I never did anything to copy protect my DVDs. I'm not too worried about my daughter's baptism being sold/distributed.

But thanks for your sincere concern. If you put that much effort into something other than being concerned about what you think I am doing wrong, you'd be pretty helpful. :P

You're absolutely right. I just founf out that my cousins in Canada were held up this morning at gunpoint and was a little frazzled. My apologies.

However, I also simply stated a broad question and can reassure everyone that I am simply copying my own DVDs (meaning my own filmed movies)

In that case there is nothing easier than using DVDDecrypter (free): iso read -> iso write. That simple! I can't believe Nero is throwing up that message for your own movies, or else you could have done a disc-to-disc copy. If you just wanted them on your hard drive, you could just drag and drop them there, no programs required.

Thats always been the problem with Nero. It will say copy protected to every disc you throw at it.

Ive even made some backup of data from my hard drives to several dvds and every time i make an additional copy using Nero disc to disc copy, it says disc is copy protected, even though it is not.

Nero will always say disc is copy protected whenever you do a disc to disc copy, be it cd or dvd.

  21. Oh yeah waheed, I remember that, I get that message in the status window, but it always continues to copy it anyways without problem. Therefore should not even be an issue in this situation.
