So what was the problem, Inquiring minds want to know?

*careful how you answer that, a line of bullshit isn't going to cut it here*
Read my posts. It's been said.

    Nerd. Nerd. Nerd.

You are in breach of the forum rules and are being issued with a formal warning. Quick being a smart ass.

I meant the source of your problem? How did you fix it?

  4. Can you perhaps add some value to this exchange by describing the solution to the problem?

I am not interested in a pissing contest. I am, however, interested in those who are adult enough to contribute to the knowledge base.

My suggestion would have revolved around any changes made to the PC since the time when it did work and the time when it did not. Something has changed. I also would not have ruled out something as simple as a bad cable or interface connection on one of the external devices.

So what was it you did that fixed the problem?

  5. Sorry, re-read previous posts.

So are you saying that the capture worked fine, then you added a RAID-0 setup to the PC that was not there before, and then it began showing a problem?

Such a significant change to the PC architecture should certainly be mentioned. If the scenario is as I outlined above, and you had described it as such, you would have had your answer much sooner.

The information posted about Raid-0 was accurate. Your findings seem also correct. It is a question of the merits and drawbacks of the system, of which there are several on each side. I have a thousand dollars worth of RAID hardware on my desk right now which may quite literally go in the trash because it is relatively useless to me for what I want.

As for this forum and its relative value. If you find a place with more useful information relating to Digital video capturing and converting, with a more helpful user community, I would certainly like to hear about it. Haven't found anyplace better in 5 years.

I was pretty sure that I had tried capturing to this RAID-0 before, but perhaps months ago when I was doing this stuff, my drives were seperated. Back then I was benchmarking everything, including the differences between the RAID-0 being off and on, and chunk sizes when it's on. So I must have never tried capturing to the RAID-0 until now.

    But speaking of benchmarks:

    http://img342.imageshack.us/img342/8206/untitledcopy3ud.gif

That's that . There's my RAID-0 compared to 4 setups of equal RPM and cache size. No more silly bickering now.

It's fine if someone does not NEED this kind of speed for their setup. That's cool. Capturing certainly doesn't require this kind of power. HOWEVER, the second someone tries to come along and naysay RAID-0 altogether as worthless, they are a moron, plain and simple. The only arguement anyone can conjure up is the data-loss factor. But only a dumbass would use a RAID-0 without having a good external backup HDD, entirely dedicated to safekeeping your important stuff.

So in other words you still can't capture. I didn't see anyone "naysaying" RAID 0, just pointing out that it's not viable for capturing video.

To repeat, there have been over a dozen posts here and in similar forums about serious capture problems with SATA drives in RAID zero configuration using current motherboard resources. EIDE/ATA drives don't seem to have the problem.

I don't recall a solution other than breaking the RAID or converting to a video oriented PCI RAID card.

RAID zero still has its places for multistream work and is used extensively for accessing video servers.

I still can't capture? That's funny. I believe I clearly said that I could capture flawlessly to my external USB HDD. Hmm...funny.

So you didn't figure anything out except that RAID 0 is no good for capture yet your blasting edDV for telling you it isn't.

Nice PeeWee Herman arguement tactic there. Why do you keep talking? Do you think it makes you look like you "win" by getting the last word in? Is this how you fight with your mommy?

That's the second time you eluded to other people as being juvenile.... yet

See, the thing is when someone comes here and asks a question they should at least have the courtesy of listening to what is posted instead dismissing it. Do you have accept it? No, but most of the posters here are quite knowledgeable, MUCH MORE that you will ever be. To dismiss what they say without considering it is disresepectful and frankly quite stupid.[/quote]

  13. He WAS being a nerd. But I'm sure you'll love to argue that too.

There was not one helpful post in this entire thread. Everyone has been entirely clueless to the problem, and ignored all my attempts to explain that I have tried all the basic troubleshooting methods. I didn't "dismiss what they said". I had tried it all already.

It was me who solved the problem, because you all would rather act like total losers and argue about pointless crap.

If any moderator in this place has an ounce of logic they would close this god damn thread. It's a waste of their bandwidth.

My apologies, my crystal ball was broken today. Any chance you would know how to fix it.

Everyone was trying to help you gain more knowledge. You are extremely ungrateful and deserve no videohelp whatsoever. You come across as a complete and utter snob.As for calling people nerds, thats rude and totally out of order.A nerd to you obviously means someone that is way more intelligent than you are.

  16. BINGO! The solution:

    http://img306.imageshack.us/img306/8837/untitledcopy2mk.gif

Turned my RAID's operating mode from UDMA5 to PIO3, and now the corruption is gone entirely. Now to see how high I can raise the setting before the corruption begins. Otherwise I can just remember to flip to PIO3, before capturing, and flip it back when I'm done.

I swear you guys are worthless. No figured this out before me, in this entire forum's history? Come on!

Edit: Only the PIO modes work out for capturing. Fair enough.

You are in breach of the forum rules and are being issued with a formal warning. One more, just to get the point across.

  19. Slowing UDMA5 drives to PIO3 may seem like a solution to you, but not to me. Particularly when a seperated, single OS drive and a UDMA5 on its own channel is perfectly adequate for AVI capture with no dropped frames, and without the dangers of a striped drive.

Seperating the OS drive and the capture drive is also basic knowledge to the experienced users here, most of whom you have managed to piss off.

OS on a striped array is also something no professional tech would do. Monthly reformats are just not acceptable to almost all users, that it is to you is so unusual you should not expect anyone to anticipate that.

Imaging of boot drive is also a standard practice. Again, that you find this for some reason unacceptable is a situation so far out of the norm that you should not be surprised people find your attitude unusual.

Understanding that benchmarks are Indicators of performance, not proof of real-world achievement, is also basic. The benchmark you were so happy about turns out to have no relevance to your situation. That performance is theoretical, as it turns out you are unable to actually use that speed, at least not for video.

You complain about not getting answers when it is you who failed to describe significant changes in your procedure and hardware. You were told early on that MOBO Raid has caused problems for many users. The "fix" is simply not to use it, as it is not needed. If you had a fraction of the years of experience represented here you would have known this, and the reasons why.

There is a saying used in many areas, "he don't know that he don't know".

And so is your RAID performance.
