Using Goldwave, I extracted and decompressed the audio of an AVI file. After performing certain audio boosting in Goldwave on that file, I saved it as an MPEG1-L3 192kbps 48KHz (mp3) file.

I actually wanted a wav file, but, I couldn't save it as a wav file, coz, the available streams are PCM with 1536kbps and ADPCM with 1536kbps only(No other stream is available in Goldwave, as far as saving a .wav file is concerned). Since both these streams occupy extremely large amount of space, I didn't opt to save it as a .wav file.

Now that I obtained an mp3 file with MPEG1-Layer3 audio stream having a bitrate of 192Kbps and sampling frequency 48KHz, I want to convert this mp3 audio file into wav without changing the bitrate. When I tried converting into wav using Blaze Media Pro and Cheetah Audio Converter, the output wav file has got a bitrate of 1536Kbps, which again makes the file size extremely large. Pls suggest a suitable software so that I can get a wav file with 192Kbps only.

I must say that I've never seen a WAV file that isn't 1536kbps, which makes me think that perhaps no other bitrates are available to PCM
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. WAV or PCM is an uncompressed audio file and can only be made smaller by reducing the bit depth(ie 8,16,24) or sample rate(ie 32,44.1,48kHz,etc).

  4. That's the whole point of MP3's and so on, wav files are not very portable. It would help to know what you're trying to achieve. If you want to use the wave as the audio track for a for a movie, don't worry about the size; when encoding to MPEG 1 or 2 the audio gets re-encoded to a compressed format anyway. If you just want preserve the audio, then re-encode the wav with a loss-less CODEC.

is it the same case for MPEG4 (AVI) encoding too....i'm using VirtualDubMod to mux the avi file with this wav audio. Will it be encoded(or muxed) to a compressed format.

  6. Only if you specify this.

  7. Almost, you can use a number of different audio formats with MPEG4, including PCM, you just have to choose. I don't know how VirtualDubMod does things, it might be a simple setting when you encode or it just mux' in the audio you give it.

When using Virtualdubmod, after you add the stream, right-click on it and go to full processing. then right-click on it again and go to compression. Here you can choose any codec you please and configure it to your own taste.
    If in doubt, Google it.
