If anyone can help me out with this problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, so my PS2 is having issues reading a DVD+R that I burned containing a picture slideshow. It will read the DVD but will not play it, instead giving me the message "TV system doesn't match". I have done some research on Google and have come to the conclusion that this might mean that my Playstation 2 thinks that the DVD is PAL, when really it is an NTSC video burned disc.

So here are the following steps I took to burn the DVD:

    1) I opened up Slide Show Movie Maker and added all my pictures and messed around with the transitions and timing until I liked the product. Then I exported to AVI video (with DivX compression because I didn't want a massive file - plus Slide Show.. splits the AVI at 2 gb).

    2) Once that finished I opened up VSO DivXtoDVD and converted it using that program to a VOB file with the VIDEO_TS folder, etc.

    3) Then I used ImgTools to take the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders and make an ISO image out of them.

    4) Once the ISO was completed ImgTools automatically opened up DVDDecrypter and began the burning process of the DVD+R.

    5) That finished easily and I had the burned DVD+R that would not play in my PS2.

Now the strange think is is that the whole conversion process went very smoothly and no errors occurred. Also, another DVD player (an Allegro ABV441 - an NTSC player) played the burned DVD+R with no problems and could read it just fine. So I am thinking it is a problem with my PS2 or am I missing something? I am confused as to why my PS2 would not play this DVD which in my thinking is a regular NTSC disc. Also, I made the picture CD this way because I didn't have to pay anything - all those programs are free. The DVD+R turned out great with good results and quality and I really like Slide Show Movie Maker. If anyone knows an easier way (although this method was pretty easy) or a way that might work for free that would be great. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

  2. I didn't know a PS2 could play picture disks.

It's not really a "picture disc" because the pictures are in VOB format - a regular DVD video. I cannot scroll through the pictures in the way that I burned this disc - only fast forward and rewind through it. So it's just a regular DVD video with pictures instead of moving video - not individual JPG files on the DVD.

Nobody knows any possible solution to this or do I just have to wait longer for an answer (not trying to be hasty or anything)?

    Thanks

  5. Interesting.

SFAIK, SSMM outputs a standard AVI file, not the special DVD slide show format. So that is not the issue. I can tell you that if your photos are of good quality, you are very seriously degrading the image by going thru Divx to Mpg. Try encoding the split uncompressed AVI files to MPG, you can join them at authoring.

But for your problem - Have you successfully converted or created a standard video to DVD using these methods, other than SSMM? PS2 seem to be picky about both media and burning program, as well as burning speed.

Did you check the resolution settings at each stage? What is the audio format?

Thanks a lot for the reply Nelson37. I have made many, many DVD+Rs of DivX encoded AVI videos that I have converted to DVD using VSO DivXtoDVD (steps 2-4) and they have all played in my PS2 fine and without problems. And I have even burned another DVD converted using that program as well to DVD that worked well too (all using DVDDecrypter on 4x speed to burn). The quality of the picture DVD is good actually and is fine for me. Is there any other method I could try?

Also, to answer you question about the resolution - the video was in standard 720x480 throughout the whole process and the only audio format that SSMM allows is WAV (which I had at CD Quality - Stereo, etc.)

I just find it odd that it is not recognizing the DVD as a playable format when my other player will play it just fine...

  7. Have you made other DVD with a WAV audio that played on the PS2?

There doesn't seem to be any other difference here between files that worked and this one that does not. Is the media the same? Have you tried another disk, in case that one was defective?

I have experimented a LOT with slide shows. What is different with them is that the quality of the original photos is often higher than DVD resolution. Multiple compression cycles significantly degrade the image; while it still looks good, an MPG encode from the uncompressed AVI looks very much better.

I have made a DVD slideshow without the WAV audio and it still does not work. Is there any other method I could try for creating the slideshow and/or burning the DVD to see if that would work? I really want to have to whole process be free though.

Once I have the exported AVI from SSMM is there a free program to burn that AVI directly to DVD?

  9. You might try dvd-r media. Write at 2x.

    What version is your PS2?

    I have a version 7 PS2. I'll see if I can try burning a DVD-R at lowest speed. Thanks.

  11. Just had a thought. I was thinking about what could be different with this file, when the only difference in process is that the original source is static pictures.

Have you checked the average bitrate of the finished Vob's? I think I remember reading that the PS2 does not like very low bitrate files, and a series of JPG files will encode very efficiently.

  12. Any solution to this topic?
I'm having the same problem here...
I even tried using region free, but I always get that "tv system doesn't match" error...
    PS2 is US-39001...
According to dvd decrypter, the dvd is region 1~8...
    =S

  13. Hmm, if you have an Action Replay for the ps2 its supposed to make your ps2 region free.

  14. I tried the GameShark and got the same results...
    Not working...
Now I think it's not a region problem...
My PS2 is NTSC, and the dvd is PAL...
I tried that "patching" method to make the dvd NTSC using IfoEdit, but after that the dvd just won't run...
Guess I'll try a full conversion...

  15. What you are getting is an accurate statement of conditions, and you are NOT having the same problem as the original poster.

You put a PAL disk in an NTSC system, and the PS2 states that they do not match. It says that because they do not match.

This is not a region problem, nor a defect in the player, disk, or television. It is not suppossed to work, and it doesn't.
