After setting pulldown on the Multiplexer Settings page and doublechecking settings on other pages and going back, pulldown has always reverted to auto. If auto covers every situation, why are the settings there? If OK is clicked after setting pulldown, is that setting saved? Also, pulldown on the Video Settings page is always greyed out. Can and should it be set? Thanks

If the input video is 23.976fps, MC will automatically add pulldown. You only need to mess with the settings, if using a non-standard mpeg-2, instead of the DVD template, and MC usually get's it right anyhow, greying out the option if it doesn't require you to change it.

25fps video has no pulldown, and doesn't need it, nor requre it. I'm not sure I understand the question?
