  1. Hey all:

Have been using this recorder for a few months now.
In the begining it worked fine. Have made 50 some discs, probably.
Lately the copies seem to be glitching and freezing no matter what.
I've used different brand discs, TDK, Memorex, Philips.
And, I've used both VR and fixed 2hr SP, and XP.
I'm really mad because I bought this for tranferring MiniDV camcorder.
It's no good if the disc is unwatchable!
I've looked on the Pana website but no firmware upgrade for this model.
    What do I do?
Is it me or is my machine a lemon?
Should I experiement with other discs?
I got it at BB on April 04.

thanks in advance for any help.

  3. The factory warranty is one year for parts and labor. When you say glitching and freezing are you referring to playback in the recorder or another player?

FYI, Memorex and Philips are crap discs.
TDK can be, depending on which ones (CMC).

Also, I did not think Philips made DVD-R media.

Anyhow, media is likely the issue.

  5. Whoops

Yeah, I forgot to mention the details.
Yes - it's when playing in other players.
I have an older Samsung player and an Apex.
Over at my bud's house, I'm not sure what that player was but same BS.
    The picture and sound freeze.
The last disc I looked at didn't happen for about 45 min into a 2 hr movie.
But then it happened more often after that thru the rest of the show.
The TDKs are 8x -R; the Memorex are the 4x -R; and Philips 8x -R.

I was just wondering if this was a common problem.
I know LordSmurf doesn't like the Pan's for recording.
    what media do you prefer?

and I bought it on the 4th of April this year.
these same discs work fine in my PC dvd burner, which is a Pioneer.

    thanks for the feedback
I'll try cleaning it and get some other media.
I've got a lot of Memorex 8x's to use up.

It's the player's fault. Not all players play all burned media.

Plus you're just giving brand names, not media IDs.

Buy better media. MXL, TY, MCC, etc

  7. chonan3,

The most interesting finding is that these problems (occasional stuttering and frizzing) came out only from the budget brands of DVD players.

I didn’t notice ANY problem from the well-established and reputable manufacturers - JVC, Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic and Pioneer. Not a hitch even from their basic DVD players.

  8. I am doing a big family project which requires compatibility with a lot of players owned by relatives and other families. I settled on Taiyo Yuden dvd-r, X4 media. No complaints from anyone about playback issues so far.

Just for fun, I bought some fake TY's sold under the GQ brand a few months ago. They were a nickel a disk. Those disks behaved in other players like the ones you have. They stuttered more than froze. They were tested using DvdInfoPro. At places where stuttering occured in other players, DvdInfoPro reported that the read speed suddenly dropped way down. DvdInfoPro is freeware.

  9. WOW

    Thanks Zoranka for the link.
I like the discussion between you and Lsmurf.
Lots of great info but I don't feel any better about the situation.

I sure don't want to have to reauthor discs all the time.
So - I'm thinking of getting another recorder and experimenting with media. I saw a Pio 225 at BB that was a return with no remote for $135.
I've never heard of TY - Taiyo. I'll shop around and see what I can find.

    thanks again

    I would get the Pioneer.
The Panasonic has it's uses, but sucks at recording.

And then FUJI's "made in Japan" discs are TY
Other good discs include Maxell "made in Japan"

  11. Thanks Lordsmurf:

I forgot to say thanks for the tip on the DVDinfo s/w.
I wondered how you guys know what disc is what.
I bought some verbatims today at BB, and some more TDK's.
A 50pk for $20 is pretty hard to beat.
I like those for PC dubs.
I'll check out the fuji and maxell, too.
I'm experimenting but if it doesn't go well - looks like I'll try the Pio.

    thanks again
