  1. I have an older Panasonic DVD-RAM drive in my computer (LDF321). I believe, but cannot confirm, that it only burns at 1x to DVD-R.

Does that mean I have to track down 1x media, or can I buy any DVD-R media and it will just write at 1x speed?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

All media is backward compatible. You can burn at any speed. A 16x will burn at 1x if you want it to.

I still have one of these drives. Be fore-warned that it's compatibility with media is not that high.

I've had many problems with newer media. Maxell 4x did burn just fine. Ritek 4x was hit or miss, Ritek 8x not good results, Prodisc 4x, 8x was OK, Optodisc 4x,8x would not complete the burn. 4x/8x Philips, Sony, Memorex, all were coasters. 4x Verbatim were good, Taiyo Yuden 4x was of course great. Haven't tried 8x TYs, nor any 16x media with the drive.

To be honest, you'd be much better off getting a new burner. Something like an NEC, BenQ, or Pioneer. I only use mine to read/record RAM discs now.

Waiting that 56 minutes to burn a disc just isn't fun anymore

Especially, when 16X DVD+R/RW burners can be found for ~$50.00.
