    Hello.

I am looking into getting a standalone DVD player that plays DivX/XviD/Mpeg4 discs, but most of the ones I have found say they play CDs with these files, but they don't play DVD media (or at least they don't say anything about DVD media). I'm a very big collector, so I have a lot of movies, and I would really like to store them in as space-saving a format as possible, so I was hoping to write them to DVD and be able to play them back.

Is there a player that will read these files off DVD media?

  2. I can't say for certain, but I believe just about all the current batch of DivX/MPEG-4 ASP capable players are able to play DivX AVI files off a DVD. Certainly, my one can.

    Regards.

I have a Philips dvp642 and it doesn't care whether the files are on a CD or a DVD. It works both ways.

I would be surprised if a player would only play from a CD. It just doesn't make sense.

All players can read divx/xvid files from either cd or dvd. Using dvd is more advisable since some files will not be read fast enough on cd for smooth enough view back.

Thank you very much for the info.

In that case, perhaps someone would like to fling a few suggestions my way?

I've been looking a the Philips players, because there are a couple really inexpensive models and they would be remote-control compatible for my TV, but the info on Doom9 that Philips isn't really taking care of business where upgrading their firmware to keep up with the various DivX formats is troubling.

Presently I have a hodge-podge home entertainment system, and universal remotes rarely control my satellite receiver and won't even think about my Sampo DVD player, so getting a homogenous system going (at least where remotes are concerned) is a big issue in our home entertainment system v2.0.

    So my requirements are:
    • Something < 100USD (this one is flexible, but not much, and yes, I live in the U.S.)
Something that plays DivX-encoded DVDs, and maybe even the Nero MP4 format.
Something that won't be difficult to find a remote that controls (i.e. no obscure Korean brands that a universal remote won't even look at)

    Any recommendations?

You're one hell of a demanding... person Just joking.

RJ-tech told me that their 1500 mark 2 series has nero support for their players.

Am not sure if philips has a bios that has that support or whether they ever will.

I should point out rj-tech players have a very, very bad history of breaking down within a year even with little or moderate usage.

If i were you and can wait a bit, then wait a few months till the smoke clears. The mediatek-based players from yamaha, lg, MAYBE pioneer may have nero support. I know mediatek said they will support it using the 1389. But u have to ficking beg these manufacturers to create a firmware for endusers and that may or may not happen.

  7. Buy the cheapo dvp 642(?) as having one remote to control both IS very good (and eco-friendly).. and it reportedly works as well as other players in this price bracket....... then also buy a phillips Plasma and top end Phillips Hi-fi as the SAME remote will work with these as well. Or do what I did .... "A bit louder please Jeeves, and some more beer-nuts old chap".. ditto Silentio..

  10. I have an rjtech 1500...bought it in Jan 2004 and it is still working very well. I use it alot.

Juts because some people got bad apples doesn't mean everyone got a bad apple. It would be nice to know how many satisfied rjtech customers are out there in comparison to the ones that had problems.

I've just bought a dvp642 which was end of line returned stock , aka, cheap and worth a punt. " wouldnt work with customers tv" was what it said on the box and the 16 year old sales rep was clueless. After I changed the settings on the svideo output it was all go. Played Cd's , dvd's , wont play Divx's with qpixel enabled but AGK removed that from one movie I own with no issues at all.

Down here (NZ) we get a 1 year warranty AUS gets 3 years as standard. AFAICT there is no difference in "mechanical" build between the two. Sure there are a few lemons out there but essentially what AUS gets , you get , I dont think any company would release a product onto a market where they had issues about a 3 year warranty.
