Pretty cool little freeware program. Only one problem, it only seems to encode AVI to DVD at a low bitrate. Usually around 2500kbps for me. Otherwise, it's better than the craptacular encoder for WinAVI. Any way to increase the bitrate, or any recommended freeware alternatives? Only solid one I can think of is AVI2DVD. But it's a little buggy and not as fast.

thefilmmachine or diko maybe. you can use different encoders with them.

I don't think there's any faster app than DivxtoDVD when it comes to encoding. It does a pretty good job at figuring out the proper bitrate for the scene. Don't abandon it just because it doesn't make a big file.

If you want alternative mpeg2 encoders, you'll have to learn some AviSynth basics, or you could use the excellent ffmpeg.exe for encoding.

DivxtoDVD correctly calculates the correct bitrate (check the logs then verify it against this site's bitrate calculator), however it then does something clever to save on space and speed - it uses the compression vector data from the original Divx (/xvid/etc) compression to use for the mpeg-2 encoding. You won't get better results encoding at a higher bitrate unless you apply filters first, in which case you will loose speed. I can get better results using avisynth, filters and CCE, but it takes 3 - 5 times as long.

I've been getting decent results with CCE lately. But ffmpeg.exe is a prog I hadn't considered. Thanks for the tips. Now if I could only keep demuxed files with 23.976 to 29.976 pulldown added in sync I'd be a happy man.

I have only just started using DivxtoDVD.

To be honest I am stunned, and WISH i had found it sooner.

It is a fabulous program (even more so because it is free)

As stated above, it is VERY clever, doing virtually all the work for you.

And of course the low bitrate you are getting 2500k or so, is *SO* dependant on the source material!

Despite this lower than expected bitrate, is the quality good? or at least the same as the source material?

Dont give up on it, especially if speed is an important factor to you.
