  1. I've been happily using TMPGEnc to convert files for a couple of years now, but I'm now having major problems when attempting to convert WMV files to VCD-compatible MPG. All other file types convert fine, and I'm only having problems with WMV.

I can often successfully convert WMV files that are only a couple of minutes long, but longer files are causing TMPGEnc to lock up. They seem to be converting fine at first, but a few minutes into conversion TMPGEnc will suddenly slow down its conversion rate to around one frame per minute, and the "Remaining time" constantly climbs from a few minutes to several hours and then onto eternity.

Does anyone know a solution to this? If not, perhaps there is a better video conversion tool you can recommend.

    TIA

  2. Some wmv files are encoded using a variable frame rate, which could be causing TMPGEnc to slow down.

Maybe you could try opening an avisynth script instead, using DirectShowSource("movie.wmv", fps=30), and see if that improves the encoding.

  3. The easiest thing to do is to convert the wmv files to avi with huffyuv (Very Fast Codec) using River Past Video Cleaner or any other software you prefer. Then load into TMPGEnc.
