windows movie maker, http://www.rehanfx.org/customtc.htm. but it seems a bit complex.

or convert to avi and add with virtualdub or some other editing tool.

the way these tutorials are is they want you do add an image over the video
is it possible to just add text somehow?

Create an image that is text. Depending on the tutorial, the editor and the image text file if it's using something such as .tga file which supports transparent backgrounds the area around the text will be transparent providing it was created correctly and the editor supports it. Most image editing apps can create a file such as this.

Additionally most entry level video editors support adding text directly to the video. If your looking for something cheap try Ulead Video Studio. It supports both direct entry of text or using an image as an overlay as descibed above. You can also manipulate the transparency, size etc.

If any of those tutorial you read support transparency the quick and easy method would be to create a image with white text on black background, set the transparency and use it for the entire video. The only trouble with that is it will darken the video.

I'd convert to AVI, then use this guide, or use Virtualdub 1.3c, which should open your WMV file directly.
    If in doubt, Google it.
