I don't like the aperture grill CRTs like the Sony Trinitrons though, that's just what they supply us with at work. Big 21" ones too. Those two horizontal lines on the Trinitrons drive me crazy for some reason. I prefer the shadow mask CRTs like my ViewSonics at home.

I also like the fact that I can buy two good CRTs for the cost of one good LCD. I'll take two big space heater CRTs over a single LCD display any day.

Scratch that, nearly three 19" CRTs for the cost of one 20" LCD.

ok..I agree about the 'people in general are idiots'. But none the less this does look better than any of the 3 crt's that I have. I also like the feature that I have it hung upside down to save even more space on my desktop. But the picture it has is undeniably one of the best I have ever seen.

from what I seen online at walmrt.com..I can get 2 19" LCD's for the price of the 20" LCD used in your example.

Agreed! I fix alot of computers for people around here and all the time I get the 'wow, that monitor is awesome!' and everytime I ask them what they have.....its a CRT. But IM one to say its personal preference. I only got one because I bought this really huge desk a few months ago, and a CRT would have stuck out right in front of me, so I opted to buy a LCD and wow was I amazed at the picture quality vs. my 3 CRT's. I know Im the envy around here to anyone that has a CRT. Not taunting anyone but I always hear that. And for so many to say it that owns a CRT must mean something! Just my humble oppinion.
Mmmmm did I miss something. Sony trinitron IS a CRT & FYI it's as flat as your LCD.

I can see that it's the second one, too. A modern, high quality LCD screen properly set up and run at it's native resolution (without any "smoothing" or other image altering crap on) can have a a very sharp, impressive picture. Not the same as a CRT, but very nice. The TV production folks where I work abandoned CRT's a couple of years ago. They all use high end flat screen LCD's now. I suppose for graphics work CRT's would have the edge for color, though.

Good test! I totally could not see it on my 17'' widescreen Dell laptop but it came in crystal clear on my 19'' Samsung CRT...

  9. I don't count laptop LCD screens as particularly good at colour and contrast fidelity. They are designed with other criteria in mind (e.g., power economy, readability under various lighting conditions).

As I stated before, I can easily see the difference on my LCD monitor (Hyundai Q17) but I did get it specifically because it is a relatively cheap 17" monitor with good colour performance. There is a point in making sure your monitor is well calibrated as well.

I dunno, my 1440x900 screen here is a real looker. I am a absolute video snob who owns multiple HDTV and PC displays, and I must say this Dell Inspiron 9200 is the nicest lappy LCD screen I've ever used, bar none. Almost as nice as my 19'' Samsung LCD at home. As soon as I get back from vacation I will test that, um, test on my other LCDs though...

  13. It has often been stated that LCD screens look "stunning", insofar as the brightness and contrast. However, that doesn't mean that they are good for fidelity which is what you need for image editing. I need to know that the image that I work with on the screen will turn out the same when I print it out or have it developed.

If the screen artificially increases the contrast and brightness too much, that simply means that when I develop the images which I think look "right" on the screen will turn out lacking in contrast and look dull when developed.

    Good luck with that

We just spent $20k to get color profiles set up for all our DCC workstations for a very exacting corporate client (wanting to match Pantone with CMYK, pah!) and they still can't get reds right. And keep in mind you need to set up color spaces for each monitor, lighting, and printer. It's near impossible to get an RGB workspace to accurately reflect a CMYK or thermal transfer output. CRTs get really close though, and that's one of the reasons the nice Apple LCD had to go is because the place that came in and did our profiles said to ditch it. Oddly, though the CMYK gamut is smaller than the RGB gamut the pitch of the LCD RGB spectrum doesn't hit the finer mids in the CMYK gamut. Wierd, huh?

I was gonna take that nice 30" Apple display and bring it home to play an aquarium screensaver in conjunction with my HTPC but I figured they'd miss such an ergonomically-pleasing display

I have to admit that a native res of 2560x1600 with a response time of 16ms is pretty nice, but at $3000 I think I'll pass.

They are nice aren't they? Too bad they are such a pain in the ass to actually work on.
