forty-two, Tiger, & BSD subsystem

I just tried forty-two (free version) to see if it would work on my system: Tiger running on a Powerbook 17".

Forty-two requires the BSD subsystem, which is installed by default on Tiger. Yet the DVD conversion using forty-two failed with a message the the BSD subsystem was not installed. I checked the /Library/Receipts folder and found the BSD.pkg happily there. So apparently the error message was incorrect.

Two questions:

1 - Has anyone else had this difficulty with forty-two? I'm willing to try the for-pay versions but I assume if the free version fails, so would the others.

2 - Is there an alternative for creating smaller DVD-like files on my hard drive? By DVD-like I mean something that has the desired audio, video, sub-titles, etc, and also has the menus of the original? Commercial is fine. I looked at Toast Titanium, but I couldn't tell if it would do what I want to do in terms of conversion to a small, computer-friendly, DVD-like critter.

I've reverted to HandBreak, and build quicktime movies just fine. But I'd avoid considerable hassle if I could just rip to a smaller, computer-friendly format.

Get Mac The Ripper for your ripping needs.
Get DVD2OneX for your creating smaller DVD-like file needs.

#1 reccommended apps for Mac on this board,
and both are Tiger compliant.

If avi files are what you want, I find that Handbrake works better. If you want dvd files, follow terryj's advice.

DVD2OneX is the standard. DVD Remaster is another, lesser known alternative. Popcorn, from the makers of Toast, is also an alternative. Out of those, DVD2OneX is the way to go.
