Hello all. I'm having an issue when attempting to capture video to my hard drive from my Sony Handycam.
The problem seems to be with the .dll's, drivers, or something that has been changed in regards to video on my computer.
I have an Inspiron 5100, Win XP Home, SP 2, and have been using WinDV to capture through my firewire port. I never had any problems before, and after about 4 months since the last time I captured video, now I am having this issue. The computer recognizes the Handycam in the device manager, and the drivers say they are working.
Now when I attempt to capture WinDV gives me an error saying "Runtime Error", and that the application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. I uninstalled and reinstalled WinDV, but no luck.
I also tried to use NeroVision Express, but it also will not allow me to capture now.
I viewed some other boards, and found some posts with similar issues, but not exactly the same one. They were suggesting that the problem could be with a .dll within the System 32 folder, specifically the qdv.dll. But none of their solutions has worked for me.
Any thoughts on what might have changed in my computer to cause this problem now? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Please detail ALL changes to the PC in between the time it worked and the time it does not work. ALL SOFTWARE OR HARDWARE CHANGES SHOULD BE LISTED. A software change would be ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING AT ALL, which has been installed, upgraded, or removed.
Other than virus activity, or hard drive error, it is almost certain that some procedure that you, the user, have performed is what is causing this problem.
ALL repeat ALL software or hardware changes to the PC must be examined to determine the source of the problem. Then the fix must be found. Finding the fix without determining the source of the problem will likely have you in the same pickle at some point in the future.
If no changes known, has anyone - most particularly any teenage boys - had access to the PC? If this is not known, is it possible? By possible I mean was the PC in an unlocked room with any teenagers within 10 feet of it. That PC represents a lifetime collection of Playboys.
Has the PC been moved? Not just shipped, but even a few inches? Could it have fallen over while running? If this is not known, is it possible?
Have you run a Scandisk, Virus Check, and Spyware check? -
Thanks for the reply. Well, there are a few different users who have access to my laptop, but no teenage boys, meaning no one that would be downloading that sort of content.
There have been a few software changes, more or less just updates to previously installed software such as messenger. But nothing that would have caused any drastic changes I would think.
I would agree though, obviously something has changed to cause this sort of problem, and most likely it was caused by someone using the computer. I guess now since I am not aware of any major changes, my Spyware scans are clean, no viruses, and the laptop has not been dropped, I would like to know if anyone has had an issue like this, and any suggestions of how to solve this dilemma. Where should I go from here? Thanx! -
Isn't there a details button, this should tell you specifically what file is giving you the trouble. Not only that if you use the report this error button it has been known on occasion to provide some useful information from MS.

Since you are apparently ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that none of the "few software changes" could have caused this, and apparently don't feel up to the effort of giving detailed information, my crystal ball shows no clear solution and I am unable to help. Good luck.

I have heard of Firewire port failures, and some folks recommend refreshing the Firewire driver. XP SP2 does make some changes to the Firewire driver and some folks report Firewire throughput reduced to 100 Mb/s.

I apologize for my vagueness. I guess I was hoping to find someone that has had a similar problem, and had possibly found a solution within the realms of the DirectRun Showtime .dlls in the System 32 file. But as I said, I was just going on something that I had seen on another board, and what this error message was refering to.
I am really not certain about anything, and I would know that any change to the computer could cause this. The only changes to the computer since I was able to capture video were an update to the current edition of MS Messenger, and the addition of Tivo Desktop software for my network. Thats it.
And unfortunately this type of RunTime Error does not give me that option of reporting it to MS, or a details button. I know what you are refering to though with other errors. But again, thanks for the responses. -
check if Tivo has an install log for any changes in System or System32 directories.and/or uninstall tivo, reboot and try it. good luck

Also disable everything in MSCONFIG see if something is interfering then one by one restore to find out. Windows diagnosis is hectic. I had almost similar problem with program that came with my Sony camcorder, such a hastle I ended up using Ulead it is so much better and it did everything in less steps. In general if you have done this before and can save your data, reinstalling windows will take you back to the first day you bought your computer No viruses, trojan horses dead wood that some programs leave behind etc. Do a clean install of your basic windows and programs and keep an image on dvd then it takes 1/2 hour to restore every time you need it.

Tivo Desktop Software? That certainly sounds video-related, now doesn't it? Yet I practically had to poke a sharp stick in your eye to get you to mention it.
I mean, something goes wrong with your video, after installing a video-related piece of software, and you don't think to mention it??
And people wonder why tech-support guys sometimes get a little annoyed with customers.
