I saw a LiteOn DvD Recorder for $139.00 at a local Sears. I just want to know if its worth it?

Cant really remember the model no.

  2. Probably the 5007. Like all Lite-On units, it can easily and safely be hacked region-free and macrovision free (for both recording and playback). It has the TV Guide on screen menu system (free) which some say is a little buggy, but can be bypassed or not used at all if you run into problems with it. DV to DVD conversion of digital videotapes (MiniDV, Digital8) via the IEEE 1394 firewire input is excellent at the highest quality (1 hour per disc) setting. Analog input recording has some video noise filtering that helps reduce grain and chroma noise from VHS tapes and TV signals. Use the rear input jacks only, though. The front analog A/V jacks are known to be a little noisy for some reason. Sears has a good return policy if you don't like it.

I have a LiteOn 5001 that I hacked and it tends to work well. I would say to hack it for 3-hour, MV-free and region-free, and then to record on the unit from 2-3 hours modes (maybe 4 hour for animation). It will do nicely on VHS tapes conversions, as well as off-air or DV stuff.

  6. Does the 5007 lack the ability to do Monday-Friday programming? The 5001, 5005 and 5006 and the Ilo DVDR04 only do Sunday through Saturday, rather than M-F. Is the tuner still mono on the 5007?
