  1. I want to convert my 640x480 Divx in to a format i can watch on my DVD player. My DVD Player supports every format, so my question is which format will offer me the best results.

    thanx in advance.

  2. I would think anything higher than XVCD & SVCD would be useless since the Divx resolution is only 640x480. So i guess what I am wondering is whether to use SVCD or XVCD, because the examples i've seen it's hard to tell that much difference between the two. But SVCD does seem to have slightly better picture quality. Am i right, please give me your input.

    Thanx

With a source resolution of 640x480 I think 480x480 is the most logical resolution to encode in. You should use SVCD since it will be compliant at this resolution. Really the only reason to make an XVCD at this resolution would be to speed up the encoding process, since mpeg2 takes longer to encode. If encoding time is a factor consider XVCD otherwise I would use SVCD.

  4. Just to clarify... DivX has no official resolution, it's encoded at whatevers convenient.

The problem with divX is for some reason it doesn't make a very good souce for (s)VCD, you get lots af artifacts, blocks... all that stuff.

SVCD results are very dissapointing, I haven't done to much vcd from them, but the results should be better (the downsize will help with artifacts).

Basically test both and see which looks better, a lot will depend on how well the DivX was encoded.

  5. well.. divx can be encoded at any resolution (within avi constrants of course) but ALSO at different bitrates. if you have a 640x480 divx encoded at 400k bitrate the large resolution will produce some quality in some detailed areas but horrible artifacting in other areas (the codec uses up the 400k where it thinks it needs it most) you can also have a 640x480 divx encoded at 1000k bitrate. this divx will look excellent (provided good source - ie dvd) and be worthy of svcd (in my opinion) . if anything a divx at that spec would take a loss going down to vcd.

  6. The DivXs i was considering converting too SVCD are DVD-riped, so that explains what i'll do with them.
All the others (screeners and cams) i will convert too VCD or XVCD.

    thanx again.
