    Install and register Avisynth.
    Open notepad, type

    AVISource("c:\..path..\filename.avi")

and save as filename.avs. Note, select "all files" , not "textfile".
Then open the *.avs in VirtualDub.

  5. i just tried that and it says Avisynth open failure
Invalid AVI file LIST chunk <4 bytes

I have no idea what that means
    did I do something wrong?

I don't know. I never got such an odd error message.
Also I think the problem must be somewhere else, because usually VirtualDub is able to open >2GB files.
    I still have no clue.

Not sure if I have this right but did you say the audio was already in wav format and you want to make an MP3? If so, you should be able to convert the wav with an MP3 encoder. You won't need to open the avi. However, assuming you don't have a wav already, you can try opening the avi in Sound Forge and it will allow you to save the wav and then you can convert (or if you have the mp3 plugin, save directly to mp3). Sorry, if that's not what you want so if it's not then try to be more specific about what you want and perhaps we can be more help.

  8. hi
ok i captured the avi file in compatibility mode using virtualdub 147
    it captured to 2.16gigs
the audio format was captured as pcm wav (this is not a seperate wav file)
I just want to be able to mp3 the audio within the avi to help compress it down and possibly some editing (chopping a minute off the end of the capture)

As I said I cant get anything to play or open the file other than the player of AVi-io which is a vid capturing prog for the unfamiliar
now I dont know how the method this prog uses differs to the others but it works

Also Virtualdubs hex editor (which im not very familiar with) lets me open up the file as an erm text like file i think this is the coding im really out of my depth with that
maybe I can somehow edit it there and fix it? im lost for ideas now

Now I'm confused but that's nothing strange. I didn't know you could even do that. Is this a DIVX format or something?

  11. yeh i capped the video to divx and the audio to wav
I then planned to mp3 the audio n whalaa one divx video with mp3 audio in 2 easy steps
however for this file its not working out quite so easily ;/

Sorry I can't be more help. Did you try any of the DIVX sites like http://www.divx.com? Maybe they can help.

try a direct stream copy, sometimes this cleans up problems in the avi file, then work with the copy.

  14. I coudlnt do a direct stream copy bcos I cannot access the file in vdub or play it in media player

I captured it in virtualdub in compatibility mode which i think made it an old style avi file
rather than the newer openDML avi that virtualdub supports
the old style apparently has a 2 gig limit
which is wierd since it let me capture above this limit (2.16gigs) to create an invalid avi file
    I found I could use
    Divxfix to rebuild it
then use vdub to open it with the extra options n used create keyframes (well i did this with a sample of it i grabbed using vdubs hex editor, but in theory it coudl have done)
this woudl have taken me hours and I would have had to recompress the whole video
    so i deleted it!
    very very wierd
    case put to rest
    Thanx for ur help though

  16. you can split divx file into 2 files with AviChop. you can split your movie in 2 files then try opening it in VDub. then compress the audio to lame or whatever you want in both files then try to join them using VDUb.
