Another DVD SP Subtitles Thread...

I have DVD SP 4 but have never had to use subtitles before. I've seen it done. It's easy. You convert the .srt or .sub or whatever using ffmpegx or TitleLab or whatever and then you import the asset. Nothing to it.

But no matter how hard I try, using either of these programs, I can't import the asset. I get

IMPORT ASSETS
INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT

I've even tried manually making corrections as described at the very end of this thread and this one about SP 2, but it still didn't work. (it involves putting in "|" instead of "

" and inserting commas.)

Like I say, the Export options in titlelab and ffmpegx don't work for me, and I've tried with .subs and .srts in various languages.

Ideas? What am I missing?

Hah!
Welcome to the one wacky thing about subtitles.
You can't import them like an asset,
you have to select the Subtitle track
in the timeline editor, and right click on the track
and then it will ask you to import the Subtitle
TO THE TRACK IT IS GOING TO BE ATTACHED.

It took me several readings of Martin Sitter's book
to grasp this, and I'm not usually THAT dense.

for future refence it is on pages 580-584.

Also for the record, Subtitler 0.1.24 is a great program
for editing and generating subtitles for DVDSP.

I've found the Subtitler you were talking about and it works fine. Only thing is it doesn't import foreign characters (like é, ñ, etc.) But I'll play around now that I'm importing into DVD SP successfully.

I still can't import any subs converted from ffmpegx nor titlelab (!), but I'll compare their .txts with what Subtitler pumps out and see what I can do.

Yeah, odd characters like that are a pain.
If you find the answer, lmk. I just went
with words not using those characters,
but there has to be a way to do it.

I seem to recall that FFmpegX's DVDSP subtitle format convertor didn't quite get the format right, and I had to do some mojo in TitleLab to make them work.

When exporting out of Subtitler (the free one), there's an option that I needed to select in order to load the subtitles in DVDSP... not in front of me at the moment, but something to do with the kind of character encoding used (like Unicode). Look under the Preferences/Options.

But it CAN be done. You'll get it right.

Now I just wish that there was a better OCR program for interpreting the subtitles than the FFMpegX one, which generates a huge number of errors...

Got it. I was spending a lot of time manually changing all the erroneously encoded symbols when I read schmeg's post.

The encoding options aren't in Subtitler's prefs but when you OPEN/IMPORT you have the option of selecting which you want (MacRoman was the only one that correctly encoded the Spanish characters) and also when you Save you can select the encoder.

Have searched the threads for this problem and havent found it... thought Id post in this thread instead of making a new mess.

I am trying to rip some subs from a dvd (which I have dome using cinematize as .sub file) and import them into DVDSP. I am having no luck importing the .sub file into any subtitle editor. I get timecode errors in Titlelab... strange characters in Subtitler... and I dont know what to do with ffmegx?? any suggestions??

Four things:

1. ffmpegx only works with .srts.

2. Download sub2srt which will do what the program's name sez, and make it more manipulable.

3. If you want, you can try changing the encoding type when opening the file in subtitler, to see if Macroman or one of the ISOs or UTFs gets rid of the stinky characters.

4. Look for the subtitles here.
