  1. Hi guys,

I have been looking at a friend's PC which has a bit of an issue. On startup, the desktop wallpaper appears and before any icons appear, a dialogue box saying that "Msgsrv32" is not responding. The cursor moves, and has the animated egg timer by it but no buttons work and the PC stops there.

Is there anything that can be done to rescue this machine? I have no experience with Windows 98, so I didn't even know if it could start up into safe mode!

    Thanks for any advice,

    Cobra

    Hi,

    http://search.microsoft.com/search/results.aspx?st=b&na=88&View=en-us&qu=Msgsrv32

Thats a list of possible problems at microsofts knowledge base site.

It might be a driver issue. Try updating drivers if possible.

    Hi,

    Sure no problem.

Can't you go into startup mode????? You might even be able to reload some backup starting files. i used to remember how to do that but fortunately its been awhile since I've had an issue with win98.

Try starting in safe mode and disabling power management. I know this sounds hokey, but it may fix your issue. If this doesn't correct the issue, you could start yanking cards individually and see if this corrects the problem. The process has something to with messages between the os and plug and play devices. At this point, it could be power management, usb, modem, soundcard, videocard...etc....
