    Hi All,

I would like to capture my small laser disc collection (mainly Star Wars) and eventually transfer it to DVD. My question is at what resolution would you recommend capturing at? I know that laserdisc resolution is not as high as DVD so I would prefer to only capture at the highest that laserdisc supports. Then when I convert the AVI to MPG I'll change the resolution to the DVD standard.

    thanks, Thephantomlord

  2. I capture laserdiscs at 640x480 but this is probably overkill.

I do the same, 640x480 using pickvideo set at 20, I get great results, almost as good as a dvd rip.

  4. Hi,

I have the DVD's of star wars which I bought when I was travelling. When I pulled up the resolution in a DVD ripping program it was 720x288. Yep 288. However, the quality is great, really crisp. The DVD also comes with a 5.1 soundtrack. The DVD is also single sided single layer presumably because of the 288 vertical resolution requiring alot less storage. If you want more details I can check.

  5. it is possible to loose an insignificant to small amount of detail at 480x480 depending on your source(laserdisc is analog). 640x480 rules out any question of lost detail

  6. Why not capture it at whatever framesize you plan on encoding it to? That's probably what I would do, but then again, that doesn't mean much

Thanks for the suggestions all.. I'll try capturing at 480x480 & 640x480 and compare the results. Hopefully 480x480 will do it since I'm trying to conserve disk space until I convert to Mpeg.
