Couldn't find this being discussed on here so I thought I'd ask... how can I go about converting WMV to AVI? I figure this is a simple task so there really shouldn't be a need for me to purchase any software but I am willing to do so if needed.
Any suggestion.
I have 2 WMV video clips which I want to join into 1 and then get onto DVD. If there is another method for this, I welcome your input.
With appreciation,
Rob Toth

You can either Join and then Convert (and Author and Burn...) or Convert and then Join. There are a number of both ASF/WMV joining tools and MPEG joining tools available here (<--). Pick your poison.
AFA converting, I have had the best success by using TMPGEnc as my converter (either encoding directly, or opening and saving as AVI and then encoding later). This includes the latest WMV9 material. Stoik seems to do a decent job of WMV->AVI, although it has crashed on me a few times.

try Stoik Video Converter.
...missed that you wanted dvd...don't convert to avi...convert directly to dvd instead with divxtodvd, tmpgenc express, tmpgenc or https://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=&s=&orderby=Name&hits=50&convert=WMV+to+DVD&...+or+List+tools -
I have TMPGENC as I needed it previously. But I can't seem to find an option to use WMV files.
Also, I still do need to join them. I was going to use Camtasia Producer to join them.
Anyways, I'll dig around. So you're saying that TMPGENC can use WMV files?? -
I haven't had luck with any of them not just TMPGENC. I even went to Stoik and the video files I create can't be combined with Camtasia.
So I have to restart my research. I figured this was a simple 1-2 deal but now I'm just confused by the multitude of software I have downloaded to create new AVI files (or to create a combined MPEG file for DVD burning out of my 2 WMVs).
I'll take a break from all this. I'm sure I'm overcomplicating something here. -
If it were any other conversion it's be much simpler. I'm with you 27am. I find WMV's to be a real pain in the booty...and they're crap to boot. I've only had real success converting WMV's with NeroVision Express 3.

That's it.
Basically, what's known as overriding the file extension (filetype) filter.

Wow! Just that easy, huh? I will try it and see what happens. I'll screenshot any errors that I get.
Thanks! -
THanks for the help. Just one last question... now I'll be left with a separate file for video and a separate one for audio (namely a .m2v and .wav). Well I have 2 .wmv that I wanted to join and then burn to a DVD... how do I join the video/audio seeing as they are now in separate files?
Should I be using a different program? My focus is simply turning my 2 .wmv files into 1 file that can be burned to a DVD (ie: AVI or MPEG or anything else I can work with in DVD authoring software). -

Problems with working around filetype filtering:
Sometimes they don't give you an "All *.*" option.
If they do, then your directory listing may have a whole lot of other SH*T to wade thru (to continue the analogy). Trying my option avoids both problems. I do it automatically that way now, even if given another option, cuz it's so much faster.

Thanks Cornucopia! Switched to "All" file types when selecting an WMV and *POOF*...TMPGEnc was ready to go. I could swear I had tried this at some point in the past but obviously not.
'ppreciate'cha!
