Hi,
I have a movie that is 173mb and when I try to burn it to a 700mb disk a message comes up saying "need a bigger disk", I can't afford a DVD burner so is there any software that will compress my movie?
thanks

are you making vcd or svcd?
what tool?
how many minutes is the clip? -
VCD is mpeg1 so Nero is reencoding it. This is done @ 1150 kbps video + 224 kbps audio. Original file size is irrelevant - just how long (in time) it is.
Solution? Split the sorce in chunks, or use an encoder where you can specify which part of the source to encode. (TMPGEnc - 100% free for VCD encoding)

122 minutes @ VCD specs = approx 1220MB, so no wonder Nero is telling you this disc will not be big enough
If you want to make it fit one CD, you'll need to make it an XVCD - I recommend this guide for this task.If in doubt, Google it. -
175 or 134 it doesn't matter. Simply Nero tried to bring the file to standard VCD specifications. Then 700 mb CD's are also 80 min VCD video (80 min is also written on the CD box). That is you have 122 min = 42 min over the size. So if you want VCD you must use 2 CD. Unfortunately this is not doable with Nero Burning Rom - I think it can't split the file.
Look at guides section for WMV to VCD guide. -
My personal opinion: Nero is a good 'authorer' and burner, but a lame encoder.
Choose a good encoder (you can do it from a wide list) and encode WMV (ASF, AVI..) ---> MPEG-1 into 2 pieces so that a.mpg and b.mpg are < 830 MB.
Then, 'author' the VCD with Nero, but only after have a fullt compliant MPEG-1 (the same for MPEG-2 and SVCDs) file, as input.
You can also, on Disk 1, add with Nero to the MPG a JPG image 'Please Inset Disc 2', for example. This way your 1st disc ends with the message...
Or make a KVCD (slightly lower quality) , reading well http://www.kvcd.net/portal/index.php . 120'-140' per 80' CD-R.
