    Get this.

I decided to backup my DS9 DVD's using DVD shrink.

I had built a PC for my brother that's still at my house and gave him my old BENQ DW822A in his case.

My case has the newer BENQ DW1620.

Both burners have made perfect backups in the past. The DW822A made working copies as recently as 4 days ago.

I bought some Philips 8x DVD-R's for these backups.

I'm using the same version of DVD shrink 3.2 and Nero on both systems.

The DVD's that I make on the DW1620 play fine on everything.

However the DVD's I make on the DW822A will not play on my Philips DVP642.

They will play on my Panasonic player and on the PC.

I thought it was a protection setting or crappy media, but like I said the copies I'm making on my PC with the DW1620 play fine on everything while the ones on the DW822A do not.

I've yet to try backing up with different media or another collected DVD with different media.

The DVP642 will start reading the disc and then instead of playing...it just opens.

One clue. I just reburnt one of the DVD backups to older Imation 4x +r media. It plays fine on the 642.

Does this mean that the most compatable player made can't handle media that my 3 year old pos panasonic can?

Is there a way to check firmware on the 642 and improve media compatability?

You know... that last part does not make sense... because the Philips media burns fine and plays fine coming off the main rig in the 642.

Does that mean that maybe the DW822A needs a firmware upgrade to improve burning ability?

Update: Nothing like trying to answer your own question . just checked the firmware. It's the oldest/original that came with the drive. Never had any problem with it until now.

I'm willing to upgrade, but then again I have to wonder why the discs played fine on the old panasonic and PC, but not on the DVP642. I guess I can always change the firmware back if that's the problem...

But I'm still leaning to it being a DVP642 issue rather than a Benq822A issue.

    Solved.

Bonus was... found some great firmware for the DVP642.

Now the 642 really does play everything.
