  1. My nephew wanted to find pictures of Dragonball GT. He used Google/Images and then clicked on the pictures he wanted to make them full size. Some of the pictures resulted in pop up boxes instead of full size pics. I saw him repeatedly closing these boxes and trying the same pic again. I told him if a pic gave pop ups to close them and forget that pic. I checked on him several times and he was doing a good job but there were a lot of pop up boxes to deal with.

Later when we were using his computer it became clear that it was flooded with malware. He had a new search bar and several programs that claimed to be adware removers were in the system tray and ads popped up when the browser isn't even open.

I downloaded and ran Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware which are two programs that I have used and trust. They found hundreds of "threats". When removing them the computer crashed. I found that if I removed them a few at a time I had more luck. I also found that I could not open Control Panel to get to Add/Remove.

Anyway I am finally down to just a few malware programs left.

    Tuna.exe

Tuna.exe keeps installing itself in my Start Up folder even after I delete it (and that wasn't easy, windows refused to delete it because it was in use)
I can't find any info about Tuna.exe. Anyone every hear of it?

I've found some sites giving step by step removal for some of these but that looks like it will take forever. Are there spyware/adware removers that are better than Spybot and Adaware?

Get Hijackthis and use it to work out where the offending software is. Restart in Safe mode and try using hijackthis to remove the registry entries. You may find some of them still remain. If so, restart in safe mode with command prompt, and remove them the old fashioned way.

Once you have nailed the files, you can use hijackthis again to clean up the remaining registry entires.

I've had the best success with Malware using Ad-Aware SE by Lavasoft and it's free to boot. Make sure the get the latest definitions and do a full system scan. Be sure you know what you're doing if you use Hijack. It's a little cryptic and you can cause some damage in the Registry if you don't know what you're deleting.

    Tuna is a virus. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.tuna.html
Use AVG Anti-Virus (Also free) to remove.

  4. Thanks guys

I might have to try hijack. I used Ad Aware and AVG and neither one even detected Tuna (Or if they did, it simply came back).

Also, that seems to be a different Tuna. This one is Tuna.exe not VBS.Tuna. This one appears in my Start Up folder even after having been deleted.
