Bar wants right to block men

An inner-city bar in Melbourne wants its staff to have the right to refuse entry to men when they outnumber women.

The owners of Chaise Lounge, in Queen St, have applied for an Equal Opportunity Act exemption, allowing the venue to enforce a strict 50/50 male and female ratio.

If successful, the basement bar could knock back patrons on the basis of their gender.

The exemption application comes after a Melbourne man sued the trendy bar last year, claiming he was discriminated against when refused entry.

Bar owner Arthur Tsiafogiannis said the claim was dropped after mediation, but the venue still regularly had large groups of men wanting to gain entry.

"It's just a safeguard for when 20 guys rock up together," he said.

"It's not that we don't want guys. We're wanting to have an equal number of men and women.

"Other clubs say no and don't give a reason. My staff tell people exactly why."

The bar, which opened seven years ago, is licensed for 150 patrons.

Chaise Lounge's application will be heard next month at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Under the Victorian Equal Opportunity Act 1995, it is against the law to treat a person differently because of sex, age, appearance or race.

go to more dance clubs or watch studio 54 again ..

it is done ALL the time -- in fact that is why females also often don have to pay cover charges ...

they like close to a blend of 10% crazys , 50% females hots, and 40% males ..

    or 50 /50 ....

there is a lot of science in night clubs in how to lay out the rooms, audio zones, mixing (people) areas , washroom locations , mix OF people , and the sound / light / decor ..

audio is speeded up and slowed down from normal playback during the evening depending on the time ..

and so many "break" mixs are used per hour ...

all for getting one to consume more drinks - and come back and tell your friends - -a hot spot ..
