For decoding you would need to install ffdshow and have H.264 decoding enabled for VfW.

  2. Hi, I followed all the steps exactly. I converted an mkv to avi with subs. Quality is perfect but I have no audio. I have the correct xvid codecs installed. Any ideas? Is there an option in
virtualdubmod that I'm meant to select? Even when I open any file in virtualdubmod audio won't play when I hit play.

    Thanks in advance guys

Xvid is a video codec only. It has nothing to do with audio. mkv's can use numerous audio formats such as vorbis, aac, wavpack that VDubMod can't remux to avi.

  4. Thanks for that. But even when i open an avi in virtualdubmod when I hit play I can't hear audio.

That would be because you don't have an ACM decompressor for the format installed, that's if there is even such a decoder available.

  6. Thanks Celtic_druid. It's weird though as avi's didn't work either. I installed a ACM decompressor. Thanks again

    F*cking sh*t...

When I try to load the textsub filter, virtualdubmod crashes.

"VirtualDub has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

First off, thanks for making this guide Baldrick.

I do have one small problem. I was hoping you or any of the other members could help me out.

I have an AVI file and i would like to add subtitles to it. I made these subtitles in Subtitle Workshop and saved them in Sub Station Alpha. I have installed VSfilter and copied the .dll file to the plugin folder of VirtualdubMod. That went okay too, but i was unable to rename the folder. (as stated in your guide)

I tried it a few times, but everytime i went up a folder (to virtualdubMod) and then back again; the name was like it was before. (but the .dll file was still in it)

Then i followed your guide. Opened the video. Found the TextSub2.23 file in filters and opened them. Didn't have to reset to full compression because it was already set to it. And picked DivX 6.4.0 Codec (2 Logical CPUs) under compression. (DivX 6.4.0 YV12 Decoder wasn't working. It said: couldn't find compatible format)

Everything worked up to this point, but when i want to save the new file to avi, it will save just without the subtitles.

So, i'm obviously doing something work. I just don't know what. Any help is very much appreciated!

  10. Hi-

When I check my plugins folder, I don't find .dlls (which are used in AviSynth script files), but .vdf files, both vobsub_vd.vdf and textsub.vdf (which is what you'll be using to burn the SSA sub files into the video). I believe the VDFs come included with the VobSub package. They did in mine, anyway.

You don't want dll's in the Vdub plugin dir, it won't know what to do with them. The correct way to install vsfilter (for VDub) is to rename to .vdf. For AVISynth just leave as a dll and copy to your AVISynth plugin dir. For directvobsub, run regsvr32.exe.

    Thanks for the reply.

Manono, are you talking about the plugin folder of Virtualdub. Because i just checked mine and the VSFilter.dll is in it and i got it to work once. (the subtitles i mean) There are no .vdf files in there.

Celtic_druid, you post is a little technical for me. You are saying that i should install vsfilter and just leave it where it is, but rename it to .vdf? I also have AVISynth installed. Should i leave VSFilter where it is or plug it in to AVISynth? (i don't really work with avisynth)

  13. Hi-

Manono, are you talking about the plugin folder of Virtualdub.

Yes, I was saying what I saw in my VDubMod Plugins folder. And it's not .dlls.

Now, I have both vobsub_vd.vdf and textsub.vdf. Maybe they're old. I believe that VSFilter.dll is newer and contains both. So, just rename your VSFilter.dll as VSFilter.vdf and you should be good to go.

  14. I tryed to encoding the exact same to videos and subtitles..

    AutoGK...1 hour 26minutes
    VirtualDub...36 minutes

If this looks like much work try instead AutoGK
Guys just learn how to use virtualdub works MUCH better MUCH faster and at least you can SEE if your subtitles are getting put on your video...plus videodub has ten times better options.

    My 2 cents.

AutoGK would add subtitles using AVISynth which means no RGB24 conversion, so faster encoding than VDub. Only way VDub would be faster is lower quality video settings.

    Hi
I have a question about video filter TextSub 2.23. That is I never use the default values for word-wrapping style, font, size, bottom margin. So I change it. I can still gave a name to this new configuration. Nevertheless the new configuration is never saved. How do I do to save it, so I am not compelled to made always the same changes.
    Thanks.

  17. I used to use convertXto DVD which ebcoded my subs fine, but something happened over the past month (last time I tried to do this) and now I am unable to hard code my subs. I tried to follow your install method, but after downloading the virtualDubMod into a folder on my desktop, then trying to install VobSub in the method you showed (pointing it to the VirtualDubMod folder) it crashes the install.

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

I cannot see the textsub option in the filters...I am assuming this is due to the VobSub not installing properly. Any suggestions as to how I should proceed, or workarounds? Thanks for the help.

    Hi all

I have a vid that has been created on two CDs with subtitles.

I'd like to merge both part together (with the subtitles) to create a single mpeg or avi. What I'd then do is use Nero to burn it to DVD. I have VirtualDubMod and other tools so if you have a solution using this tool?

Anyone have any ideas on how to do this?
    Currently I have
    CD1 of ###.avi
    CD2 of ###.avi
and in the sub folder have 4 subtitle files 2 each for CD1 and CD2 using .idx and .sub format files.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Tropolite

Thanks for that AlanHK, just what I needed. Although I noticed the subtitle files are corrupted. Dagnabit!

  23. Will frameserving only work for MPEG? I want to encode things into h264/MP4 with subs (VOBs and MKVs). Do I have to first encode them into AVI or will frame serving or some other method work?

You have to enable it during the installation of VobSub. I use SAMI subtitles and they work fine with TextSub.

Thank you very much for this great guide!

contrst: Please give us more information about your source video file? avi? mpg? video and audio codec? And maybe try virtaldub or virtualdub-mpeg2 instead of virtualdubmod.

Fantastic threads! (This and "How to convert matroska MKV to AVI or OGM to AVI".) I've got everything going smoothly (MKV extracted, .srt's sitting pretty, .avi and .mp3 smooshed back together) UP TO the following point...

Okay, I've followed all of the instructions as closely as I could, but whenever I try to open a .avi in VirtualDubMod, I get this message:

Consequently (I think), "Video>Filters" is grayed out and unselectable; I cannot add the hilariously bad Engrish subtitles! "Filters" is only selectable when no video file has been loaded. How is it that the program is saying I don't have Video for Windows codecs? (I didn't think that could even be true.) Anyway, I googled "Video for Windows codec" and gave ffvfw and 3ivx a shot and a noodle, but nothing has changed. What's up?

However, when i tried playing it using the Windows Media Player, there was sound. Can someone figure out why? I don't think it's the dvd's fault though...Pleasseee reply...thanx!
