if you have any of the transfer software for the psx, you could try formatting it with that. or if you've got a chip/swap method you could try looking for a formatter.. otherwise, go spend 2 bucks and get him a used one at gamestop.

Can't the PS1 format cards on its own? Its been so long since I used one, but I thought if you booted it up with no game in it that it took you to a menu that let you do various things with the memory cards.

It sounds like its just broken. Maybe try putting rubbing alcohol on a q-tip and cleaning the contacts. Otherwise see if the warranty is still good and get a replacement.

The first time you use a memory card it formats it if you need to format it again after that you need to find and old games shark for the psone to reformat it

I am also assuming that you tried both ports you might want to see if you can borrow a psone card it might be the memory card slot also

Bad news is memory cards don't last forever, sometimes they have problems and die.

Its double likely with offbrand non sony memory cards (ok not literally double likely but you get my point) perhaps you just need a new one?

is it larger in size that a normal psx memory card?

I love when people say something doesn't work so good if you _BLANK_, and the reply is "It worked until now."

I get this alot at work. MAJOR DERAIL AHEAD!

"Its not seeing your printer, where is your printer plugged into on you Mac?"

"Uhm... they other side of the keyboard"

"Sir, they port not really meant to be used unless you need the mouse on the letft hand side, lets plug it directly into the machine, or a powered usb hub."

"But it worked fine until now! Why do I have to do this?"

"Its not very reliable but it does in some cases work, its just unpredictable. It worked until I didn't right?"

    "I guess..."

5 min later they are back up and running.

The moral of the story is.... I need sleep or something.
