  1. Hey,

can anyone recommend a (preferably free) program that can capture and encode as MPEG2 video (720x576) and audio directly? Pinnacle Studio 9 can do this, but I get A/V sync problems, so I want to try another program. I have Virtualdub-MPEG mod but I don't think that this program can do it.

Edit: I am capturing from an S-video source.

    Thanks.

I tried WINDVR and WINDVDRECORDER. They are working fine but capture deinterlaced. So when you want to make a DVD to look on a TV, this is not the best software.
CHRIS-TV is also good with a lot of possibilities, but with me there is too much noise, and no noise reducing setting.
I have the best result with MAINCONCEPT PVR 1.3, but it asks a lot more of resources from your system than CHRIS-TV. You have to try the settings to have the best results for your system. I capture MPEG2 PAL 720x576 at average bitrate 7000 (max= 8000, average =7000 , min =0) with the Quality/Speed slider on 30, and noise reduction = 8
The only negative point is that there is no possibility in the timer to start the program from hibernate state.
Recently I captured "Pearl Harbour", 2 hours and 20 minutes. I had a file of 9 GB, made a DVD structure with TMPEG AUTHOR and shrinked it to fit on 1 DVD with DVDSHRINK( 50% reduction !!!). The result was much better than VHS recording.
