  1. Hello, I have

-Pinnacle Studio PCTV RAVE (latest drivers installed)
    -Pinnacle Studio 9.4.2
    -Win XP SP2 freshly installed
-XP3200+, 1024 gig RAM, 250 gig HD, Radeon 9600 Pro etc

My problem is that I cannot capture using Studio 9. I go to the "capture" tab and select "pctvcap.dll" as the capture device. After that I am supposed to click a tab on the left hand side of the Disc-O-meter but this tab is completely empty when it opens! Therefore, I cannot select s-video as source. If I try to capture anyway I get an error message or the timer starts counting with lots of dropped frames and no capture.

I can capture from s-video in Virtualdub without problems. In PCTV Vision, I am not allowed to change input signal from "Tuner" to "composite" or "svideo", it does not respond even if I click OK.

Anyone got any ideas? I really want to get my capture card to work in Studio 9! (capturing from a DV camera does work)

  2. If I read you right you can capture from a DV camera in studio by firewire but not by s-video?

    Why not stick with firewire?

When you go to the capture tab and select your device(pctvcap.dll - that don't seem right to me?) what other options are available on the list - sometimes it's not so obvious which one works with what so I'd try them all.

  3. First of all, I have 1024 meg RAM, not 1024 gig

I am trying to capture SVHS-C-tapes from a SVHS-C camera, therefore I can't use firewire. I have a DV camera as well, and capturing from that (using firewire) works.

In Studio 9, the only available capture sources are "pctvcap.dll" and "DV camera".

If I look in the Windows Control Panel, pctvcap.ddl is listed along with "WDM Video for Windows Capture Driver (win32)" under "Legacy Video Capture Devices", which again is listed under "Sound, video and game controllers". "Studio PCTV" and "Studio PCTV (audio) is also listed under that tab.

When I try to use Windows Movie Maker it just says "Video device is in use".

Please ask if you need more information.

  4. Breakthrough! Problem solved. How I did it? Well:

    1) Uninstalled PCTV drivers

    2) Installed Conexant universal capture driver (googled for it)

    And we are go

  5. Guess what, another problem

The audio is out of sync with the video. It starts off well but the audio gradually lags more and more behind up to maybe 5-10 seconds at the end of a 45 minute capture. I use the standard settings (DVD quality and 48 KHz audio) when capturing using Studio 9.

Anyone know what causes this? Can it be fixed with Virtualdub or similar? I have the Virtualdub-MPEG mod installed but I'm not sure how to proceed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  7. Thanks for the links, I'll give them a read. It would of course be best if I could find out what is causing the A/V sync problems in the first place.

I get no dropped frames during capture, so that can't be it.

  8. I've noticed that, if I capture as AVI (MJPEG 95% quality), I do not get A/V sync problems. The audio is then captured as PCM 48KHz.

It would be interesting to try to capture MPEG2 video with PCM audio, but Studio 9 won't allow me to do that (perhaps because the audio is "embedded" into the video file)? Is there any way of "forcing" PCM audio instead of MP2?

Is MJPEG (95% quality) a good template for converting to MPEG2 video? All resolutions are 720*576.

  9. I would suggest working with AVI files as from my experience using mpeg with Studio can lead to problems.

I prefer to use Studio as an editor (I know many do not)

When using Studio I have achieved the best results using the following method:

Capture & edit in Studio using AVI then export as AVI

    Encode to Mpeg using TMPGenc.

    Author to DVD using DVDLab.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, but why not use Studio for all of these steps? Rendering takes some time but I can always leave it on overnight

  11. You can use Studio but I have found that TMPGenc definately produces better quality mpegs and DVDlab is much more flexible for authoring.
