  1. (Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong forum; none seem to fit.)

I installed an IEE1394 card to capture video from my Sony Handycam. Worked great when I installed it a couple of weeks ago, but now when I plug into the Firewire port nothing happens. I have Windows XP and before when I plugged it in, I'd get that familiar "be bong" sound effect and a little Sony camera icon down in the right-hand corner of the task bar. Now, nothing happens. I've rebooted the computer, checked the connection at the base of the Handycam and computer, and verified that the IEEE1394 drivers are still in place. Any ideas where to go from here? What else should I check for?

Any error message when you start DVApp? Can you set your DCR to receive (DV IN) from the port? DOes the DCR work with other iLink devices ? Do other FW devices work with your PC (iPod for ex.)? Have you swapped the cable, a different FW port?

if windows does not even see it installed, swapping cables , or using another device is going to do not much good

My Windows never sees an installed FW card, if it's not connected! Seems to depend on the card type!

I haven't thought of that. If the card card is not seen in the device manager's and can't be reactivated (by reinstalling the HW/ swapping slot) then serious trouble is on the way. In that case, you are right: my advice is no use.

But IMHO it's more likely, that the trouble is outside the PC: either before the monitor or behind the case 8)
Only the original poster could tell, as the posted "the drivers are still in place", which I would interpret as "the device is still in the HW manager's list".

Kind of. But this was a problem both: in front and behind. Doesn't Sony use only the 4 Pin connectors without power? Those should be quite failsafe.

I had a similar problem some weeks ago, it was the connected DV converter, which was somewaht faulty. Worked great with the DCR, but didn't like to be connected to anything else (maybe because of a faulty power line)
