When Dana is floating above the bed in Ghostbusters and it gets very quiet and she "barks" all of a sudden is a jump point.

Pet Cemetary had a scene where the kid gets hit by a gravel truck. Maybe not a jumper, but definatly a heart stopper in the sense that kids getting killed is somewhat taboo in movies.

During Friday the 13th (I think) I kept messing with my overly sqeemish girlfreind. I kept leaning towards her and whispering Ca ca ca ca ca ca cah... She would ball up in her chair and snuggle closer and I would chuckle at how silly she was to be scarred of a damb movie. At the end of one of these little teasing sessions I turned to the screen just in time to have the shit scarred out of me! And of course everybody behind me thought it was funnier than hell to see the big tuff guy whip his head back and yell "Shit!
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

The premise isn't all that great - but if you're in a mood that you can buy into it then yes, I'd recommend it.

    Cheers!

    Hi,

Another favorite "jump" point is in Ghostbusters 2 when their in the train tunnel. They're echoing shouts and when Winstons comes back with a ghost shouting his name they start back out - then they turn around and a few dozen heads are floating around them. I know not very deep but the first time you watch it it gets you especially for an 80's PG movie.

Ghostbusters II might be one of the worst movies of all time... I don't have any supporting arguements, but compared to the first one.... awful. Ranks right up there with Caddyshack II

    Now, on topic...

The Ring - The whole damn movie is creepy

The Mothman Prophecies - See above

Signs - I had no fingernails at the end of this movie

The Sixth Sense - See above

A Stir Of Echoes - Freakin' great.

Friday The 13th - The end, when the girl is floating in the boat in the lake and young Jason pops out of the water and grabs her.

    The Gate - Several moments

    Saw - Several moments also

    Final Destination 1 and 2

Are you thinking of the bit where the girl's finger nail snaps?

The second half of Audition has some uncomfortable moments. Not sure about jumps, but definately squirms.

Alien still holds up well when the face hugger launches for the first time.

Biggest jump my wife has had in a while was actually from band of Brothers. She was sitting between the rear surrounds. Scene opens on snow. All silent along the tree line. Prolonged silence. Suddenly a rider on haorseback enters from above her head as it comes into shot from behind the camera. Her coffee we two feet into the air and all over the floor.

  10. What's happening with the "horror" movies these days?, now they have to resort to big and surprising music bursts in order to makes us jump. Yester-year horror movies have the same efect but with other more subtle ways.

    Cause the Exorcist was subtle . . . . . . .

Give me examples of subtle horrors of yesteryear that have the same impact. My horror collection is frightening not just in content, but breadth and size. While older horror flicks might not have had the gore, for the most part they weren't subtle when it came time for the scare. In fact, the list of scare tactics is, for the most part, short and well used. The basics haven't changed much over the years.

The subtlies come from how the mood is built up before the scare, which directly influences how much impact the scare has when it comes. And yes, that was probably done better and more consistently in the past. Now there is very little that is subtle at all, and when it is done with some degree of subtlety, the Americans do a remake and remove all trace so their audiences can get it (and not have to read throughout the movie - all those whispering, lip-moving voices are so annoying). The following American remakes were not required and have no justification for their existence

    The Vanishing
    The Ring
    The Ring 2
    The Grudge

And I'm sure there are more to come.

I watched Hide and Seek last night ... I was waiting for the jump , but the film was a letdown .. and looked like a ripoff from the Shinning and Cape Fear and a few other movies ...

  14. @ guns1inger Agreed!

What was unsubtle in particular about
The Vanishing remake was the ending. Not to
spoil it for others, but the ending was the punchline
for the whole film, and they basically cut it
in favour of a happier ending.

I can't comment on The Ring, Ring 2 or Grudge
as I only saw the Japanese originals. Once bitten

The scene in "Gothika" where the dead chick appears behind Halle Berry in the prison cell got me pretty good....maybe I was afraid they were going to throw in some gratuitious prison sex-which doesn't quite work when it's a dead chick and a mental patient.

I watched the remake of The Grudge the other night and it is crap. Imagine the Japanese version remade exactly, but with any semblance of plot or tension removed.

As was commented above, completely pointless.

After hearing so much about this film, I decided to put it on a very long wait list at my library. It's apparently very popular locally. And, all but a handful of reviews at IMDB.com were glowing and positive. Well (grin), my number finally came up and I got to watch the film. And after the review I left at IMDB hits the page, I suspect my PM box at IMDB will fill with hate mail, hehe. Here's my take on Audition:
Summary: In a word ... YUK!

This has to be the worst film I've ever seen in my life ... even worse than Eraserhead (and it was god-awful). The action in this film is non-existent until you've sat through one-and-a-half hours of boring and plodding dialogue. And when it gets to the last half hour of the film, it's hard to know whether you're watching something real or just a "dream" sequence (or two, or three, or more).

Nothing is proven, nothing is solved, nothing is redeemed. It isn't even a story, really. It's just a vignette about a lonely widower who makes the mistake of falling in love with a macabre and sadistic woman and pays the price for it.

Heck, I wouldn't even classify this film as good hack-em-slash-em horror. When there were still drive-in theaters, such films would come out around school breaks or at least on weekends so macho boys could take their frightened girlfriends to them ... guaranteeing them a lot of hugging (for dear life, of course). But the traditional teenage exploitation horror film would keep them riveted to the action throughout the movie. If THIS film played at a drive-in, the kids would fall asleep before the first hour was over.

Far from being "deeper, deeper, deeper," this film is "shallow, shallow, shallow" ... and not worth the rental fee much less a purchase. Rent "Fright Night" instead. It's a bad movie, too, but not as awful as this one.

The head in Jaws and the hand in Carrie.

Those two scenes immediately came to my mind because I saw them in my youth and I haven't forgotten the impression they left on me at the time...literally hair raising. The whole audience hit the roof during Jaws and Carrie was the first restricted movie I ever went to. Now I'm old and jaded and not much can make an impression horror-wise.

Just imagine the first half-hour of the Japanese movie stretched out to the whole movie.

Gothika made me jump when Halle is on the bridge and the girl grabs her and the flames come out. That scared the shit out of me in the theater.

Another one that made me jump is Dark Water. In the elevator when the girl jumps at the mother... I was watching it like at 3:30 in the morning. I was like a foot away from the screen and wasn't paying attention. I looked up and jumped back.
