  1. I recently upgraded a NEC 3520a dvd burner. I also have my old, Pioneer A05.

The problem is my new NEC burner reads at a fraction of the speed of my old Pioneer. I remeber I downloaded a hacked firmware to speed up the Pioneer a long time ago. Does anyone know if there is one for this drive? I tried the newest firmware 3.04 for NEC and it is still slow.

    Thanks,
    Tony

If your read rate is extremely slow, you may have encountered the same problem I did recently. The fix is discussed here:

Had you changed the firmware in your Pioneer in the past with something hacked ?
When you say slow, are you talking 2x or thereabouts ?

Most drives are speed limited for reading DVD video to discourage copying (the idea being if it takes too long, you will give up). A hacked firmware will remove the 'riplock' and give you back your speed. I suggest you did this to your pioneer at some point.

Many dvd writers comes with speeds locked at 2X max for ripping.

Try http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php to find a hacked firmware for your drive.
