  1. I just made several DVD-R of home movies, they play fine on my DVD hooked to my TV. I made some for other family members, Some can't play them. Is there a format I can use that will play on most if not all players, like a movie that you get from Blockbuster. What format is that?

There is a universal standard format used. There are no other diiferent formats for dvd (well for the execption of standalone dvd recorder formats)

Most likely, the issue is media compatibility. Try different media.

However, ensure that you have a empty AUDIO_TS folder as well as the VIDEO_TS folder on the dvd.

PS... How did you make the home movies. Was it on a standalone dvd recorder or on a PC?

Not warez. He's just giving an example of DVD formats. Nothing wrong with that. He never stated he's copying them.

DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs have different recording schemes - and both are different from commercial DVDs. An older DVD player may not have the programming necessary to play either of the recordable formats. If the problem persists, you could recommend that your friends upgrade their players. Since it has been around longer, a DVD-R disc will play more often in older players.

Or, like waheed suggested, your problem may be media quality. Or authoring errors - older players REQUIRE all files be in capital letters. Some older players also require the AUDIO_TS folder to be present (even tho not used).

I have a sony dvp-s300 dvd player and according to the dvd player list it plays dvd-r better than dvd+r . I have the opposite more problems with dvd-r compatability than dvd+r. All sony dvd+r -r. Go figure.

  8. Gee I didn't mean to ruffle feathers.

    1. I made home movies with my 8mm video cam
    2. I captured the video using my all-in-wonder
    3. I auther the video useing ulead (barely, i'm new to this)
    4. Using ulead I wrote the video to maxell dvd -r on my internal NEC DVD recorder.

I was wondering if Movies LIKE the movies you rent from Blockbuster. Are a special format so they play on all players (see the word like, no illegal copy here)

I know some DVD players list all the formats they are compatible with, so I thought there was one type most compatible DVD+R, DVDRW, DVDR?

But your saying it's the media? Can you suggest a brand?

You could try DVD+R and change the booktype to DVD-ROM. That may allow the older players to "see" the disc.

I have used Ritek and Taiyo Yuden media without any problems.

yeah, some like to just jump the gun

Have these people ever played any kind of recorded dvd media before ?

What brand did you use ?

And as i was typing this lantern beat me to it :P

I also have been using +R with the booktype changed to dvd-rom for a long time so they will be read by standalone players the same as a store bought/pressed dvd and have had less compatability issues.

But then agaon some dvd players just refuse to play any dvd recordable media.

    11. How can I burn a disc like "Hollywood" does?
Discs you buy in stores are pressed metal, not burned. This process is expensive, often requiring orders of 500 or more copies of the same disc. Owning the equipment takes an investment of thounsands of dollars ($USD). For more information on the differences between pressed and burned CD/DVD media, see this video: https://www.videohelp.com/~cobra/OpticalDrivesFAQ.wmv

I found that the ones I've used that work real well with no problem on my standalone is: verbatim digital movie (the one that looks like a movie reel) dvd+r but the -r I have had problems with taking a little longer to access and sometimes errors. I would have to open the tray close it and works fine. Also another brand that works well is the +r memorex and maxells. I have an apex as well as my sony, they work like champs in both players. Good luck rhendrix9

  15. Wow! thanks for all the responses.
I'm not confident in what I've done now. One problem is uLead Moviemaker and it's constant crashes,
and I have not quiet figured out "booktype", ulead suggests - recording format of DVD-Video for compatibility.
I'm assembling snippets from about 12 years of all the family gatherings, ulead is not handling this well, I wrote one to hard disk but when I tried to retrieve it ulead crashed, over and over!

    Anyone care to suggest software?

    Thanks

  16. Using ulead I wrote the video to maxell dvd -r on my internal NEC DVD recorder.
your profile doesn't say what NEC dvd burner you're using. Actually it says you're using liteon. My NEC 1300 got WAY better when I upgraded the firmware to 1.0B. I don't know anything about the newer 3520's etc. Might check the NEC website or cdfreaks for info on firmware upgrades.

I generally disregard brand name and look for Made in Japan on the dvd media package. Others disagree. www.digitalfaq.com has lots of info on good and bad media. Again, not everyone agrees.
