Okay here's the question: Besides changing the motion search precision in TMPGEnc to highest quality, is there any way possible to get higher quality video onto a vcd, even something little that might not make that big of a difference? I am looking for the highest possible quality i can get onto a vcd without putting it into svcd format or something, every little detail helps. Thanks!!!!!
PS...Im not only talking about TMPGEnc...anyhitng in the ripping process, burning...I use smart ripper, DVD2AVI. TMPGEnc, VCDeasy, nero 5.5 Anything is appreciated

errr.....setting motion search precision to higest quality (slowest) isn't gonna improve quality from high quality (slow)...
if you're making standard VCD 2.0 ... you're basically stuck with that quality...however, if you don't making a compromise, sefy has a guide for XVCD/SxVCD. I believe it's basically the same resolution/bitrate as standard VCD, but used mpeg 2 (SVCD) to encode.
However, if you insist on using mpeg 1 to encode your rip, you can try upping the resolution and/or increasing the bitrate. However, increasing bitrate will increase filesize, so you might not be able to fit 74 min VCD onto a 74 min CD-R -
If you are doing a DVD rip, you've probably just about hit the limits of MPEG-1 at VCD specs.
Some people (myself included) like the output of Panasonic MPEG Encoder better than TMPGEnc overall.

First, either make an xVCD at 352x480 or 480x480 (or use SVCD which has 480x480 standard). Having full vertical resolution makes a HUGE difference.
Second up the bitrate. The VCD standard is 1150kbit/s (video). If you lower the video bitrate from 224kbit/s -> 128kbit/s you can give more bitrate to the video. Normally I encode between 1500~2200kbit/s. This limits you to 50-60min on an 80min CDR.
Third, use 2pass VBR. Yes it doubles the encode time, but it does improve the video quaility in high action/motion scences. I normally use CCE set to 3pass VBR (ie. 4passes, which btw is faster than 2pass in TMPGenc) and can't tell the difference between the source DVD and the xSVCD encode. -
I agree with vitualis, if you want the highest possible VCD Standard quality, use Panasonic Plugin, it may be slow, but for me and others, it gives much better results in quality.

when i change the rate control mode to 2pass vbr, the bitrate directly underneath vanishes, so i go to setting to the direct right of the pull down menu and set the average bitrate to what my bitrate calc says?
