    Are you sure you need to deinterlace? It's unusual to need to do that to downloaded material. DV and MPEG2 captured video from television might need it, but otherwise...

    Disable = Off
    Blend = Blend two fields to one progressive frame
    Bob = Convert fields to frames and double the framerate
    Discard = "Even Fields Only" or "Odd Fields Only"
    Linear = ?
    Mean = ?

    It's not just only a difference in quality, but in CPU utilization, 'cause dropping frames during playback would be worse than any sub-optimal filter.

    If, when you're viewing something in VLC, you're bothered by combing (jagged edges on moving objects that look like the teeth on a comb) then you need to turn deinterlacing on. Blend usually works best. If you don't see combing, then you don't need it. It depends on the source material.

  6. And if you need to edit such footage, then Jes's Deinterlacer is a great solution.
    Available on versiontracker.com (and free).

    I've never had to use the deinterlace option in VLC. And never, never use it on my videos. I make my videos for use on television sets, thus keeping my stuff interlaced is what I want.

    Not that this comments helps you in any way, but I thought I'd just throw this out there.
