i bought an archer variable gain video amplifier, new, from a pawn shop for $2.. i figured it might be handy for transferring macrovision protected vhs tapes to dvd.. i've used a sima video clarifier before, and it seems to do the job.. but i'm not entirely sure about this device.. it was only $2, so even if it doesnt, no big loss.

the brand name is archer, and its called a "variable gain video amplifier", i think it was distributed at radio shack. it has a rca video input, and rca video output, and an adjustable gain control (min/max)

    any info would be appreciated.

usless for anything pretty well ... yes sold by Radio Shack (and a RS name brand) , but noisy as hell and pretty well not needed for anything except long cable runs (and still wrong tool for the job) or for low output on a vcr or something (pretty rare)

one that has at least adjustable gain and equalization for different cable types and lenths , all the better ones do.

    Archer equipment is noisy.
I have an extra proc amp and a detailer made by them that I need to re-sell. It's not "bad" necessarly, just not as good as vidicraft and others.

let me make sure i got you right..

    a) it wont clear up macrovison

    b) even for its intended use (long cable runs, low output vcrs), its crappy

does that pretty much sum it up?
