I recently bought a JVC XV-NP10S DVD player and would appreciate some advice. I have a film that was burnt on to a Memorex DVD-R, I can play it on my computer's DVD player but not on my JVC. I copied the film on to a Sony DVD+RW and I can now play this new version my JVC. Why is this? The JVC manual says that I should be able to play DVD ±R/±RW. Should I avoid Memorex DVDs?

JVC XV-NP10S is decent player. I also recently purchased this player to replace my old first generation DivX player. It plays well DVD ±R and ±RW in my experience with. I did not notice yet any kind of flows, malfunctions or misbehaviors. I guess you have a bad media or possibly got a bad apple player. Bring it back to the store where you bought it for exchange. If the exchanged one will show the same symptoms, then it is a bad media for sure.
