  1. Me and some friends use FTP to share files with each other.
Today I ran into a problem that I can't seem to find the answer to.
I put a file that is 4.36 gig on my FTP but when my friends connect the file only seem to be 375.47 MB. Why does this happen?
I usually use WinRAR when sharing big files and cut it into several small once but I am still curious why this happens.
I am sure it have something to do with FTP can't handle big files.

Another thing that is similar to this.
A file on my hard drive is 528MB but when my friends view the file with their FTP program the file seem to be 554MB.

  2. The second is possibly explained as the difference between the space taken on the disc and the actual file size. Especially with lots of small files, the total can be substantial.

As for the first, you may want to check if the file was completely uploaded. Your friend may want to refresh the view, as file sizes are sometimes cached by FTP clients, he may be looking at a view in memory from the time of your beginning to upload the file.
