You don't need anything but a firewire cable & firewire card to transfer footage from a digital cam. They start at about $10-15 each. Avoid anything to do with USB.

    Try here for cams: www.camcorderinfo.com

USB2 Burst speed is faster than firewire-a (480mbps vs 400mbps), but in reality I always seem to get better sustained throughput from firewire.

The device you mentioned is quite interesting -- from the specs, it looks like you can connect your dv camcorder to it, and it will transfer the dv .avi video to your computer through a USB2 connection (am I reading that right)?

There are some DV camcorders now that can connect to your computer via USB2 (and transfer the dv .avi), so I wonder if that's what this device is doing?

What types of dv-cam controls do you get when going through the device using the USB connection -- do you get full access to stop/play/ff/rw etc...?

  5. GeorgeW is correct, USB2 has a slightly faster burst speed than firewire, but the USB protocol has much higher overhead. Look at reviews of external hard drives (where transfer rates are much higher) using USB2 and firewire. Firewire always wins.

In any case, the relative speed of the two interfaces doesn't matter. The DV transfer rate is only about 30 megabits per second -- less than 1/10 the max transfer rates of either USB2 or firewire.

Firewire is the tried-and-true method for transfering DV. There are many programs that can capture from DV camcorders via firewire. Many of them are free. If you have Windows XP you can even use the included Windows Movie Maker for capture.

DV capture via USB2 is very new. You may find that the only program you can capture with is the supplied Studio 9. Pinnacle software is full of crash-and-die bugs (although I never had problems with DV capture via firewire). I gave up on Studio after using versions 6, 7 and 8. Each new release brought new features... and new bugs. Rarely were bugs fixed. It was very difficult to create a video of more than 10 or 15 minutes (with edits/cuts/transitions) because the program would get confused and/or crash. I've seen people report that Pinnacle support told them the software was only for creating short videos. And that they should upgrade to Pinnacle's high end editing product if they wanted software that didn't crash all the time!

Well you have your answer as far as the transfer rate, and considering the track record I've seen posted about the regular pinnacle movie boxes I'd get the firewire card. You can look up the other ones and you'll find they have a lot of issues. The cost for a regular firewire card is relatively cheap and will probably save you a lot of headaches in the end.

80 additional Mbps doesn't make it superior. Read up on both technologies as they both have their merits and down sides. Top burst speed isn't the only spec to consider when comparing the two. Do you purchase cars solely on their top speed?

Windows Movie Maker will also transfer through USB2 if your camera supports USB2 transfers like the GS400 does.

Explain why it needs to work with the "Pinnacle MovieBox Delume USB Edition"?

Wouldn't any DV cam work? If not why ? Ask Pinnacle.

Your heading asked for the best DV camcorder. It is clear that the best would be without doubt the Panasonic AJ-HDC27

Some DV camcorders output very low streaming (extremely low quality) video for live internet streaming purposes over USB2. Some may offer some quality over 200Kb/s on USB2. Tell me what you are getting?
