  1. I see that Nero Recode only converts DVD to MP4. Is there a way to convert AVI directly to MP4 in one step? Or would I have to first convert AVI to MPEG2 and then to MP4? I was hoping to avoid the intermediate MPEG2 encoding.

  2. Hi Mediamaker1.
You are wrong, if you choose "recode DVD and videos" (or something like this, it's the 3rd option in the main menu) you can recode AVI to MP4.
But what are you doing? What are your files? If they are covered by MP4 specifications (MPEG-4 SP/ASP/AVC for the video, and MP2/MP3/AAC for the audio) you can remux them in MP4 with the graeat Yamb of Kurtnoise (it's a gui of the command line tool MP4Box).
Keep in mind that it's impossible to make this if your source use the so called DivX packed bitstream, but you can unpack the video with MPEG4 Modifier.
It's also possible to convert a DivX3 (or M$ MPEG-4) that it's not a real MPEG-4 in a real MPEG-4 without reencoding it (tnx to Mr Khyron of Doom9 for the help) with FFMpeg see this http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=95685.
I think that's all, I hope that I will be useful for your problem!
    Cheers!
EDIT: if you can don't convert your file to another, always. Compression is always a lossy process, so if you don't want to shrink the file don't do it.

I use Quicktime 6 Pro to convert to MPEG-4, you might try it too.

MP4Box should handle packed bitstream fine.
