I usually keep my computer running for days but everytime I restart it, I have to rearrange all of my desktop icons. I am running Windows 2000 and I have had this problem since I installed it last September. There seems to be some sort of method to the madness since certain icons are always put in the same spot.

If anyone knows a fix for this bug, I would surely appreciate it. I believe I read about doing something with the cache in 98SE a few years back but I can't find any info on this using google to search or from the Microsoft site.

It sounds like the OS is rearranging them. Have you right clicked on the desktop main screen and looked at 'Arrange Icons By And unchecked 'Auto Arrange'? It sounds like 'Auto Arrange' is running. If so and it's unchecked and MS isn't any help, I'm not sure where to go next. Maybe something in the registry?

No, I don't use auto arrange. I found a registry tweak on the internet but it didn't work. I also tried the lock desktop feature and it doesn't work either.

I don't remember the name of the file that controls the desktop or I'd try renaming it.
