spawned thread - error on avi

i am facing the "runtime error abnormal program termination" under different condition. it only crops up when i double-click on CERTAIN AVIs for playback. Opening them directly from Media Player Classic, Tmpgenc, Virtual Dub Mod works fine.
actually, it is a minor annoyance as the problematic avis will continue to play fine after the error message appear. if i ignore the message, all the other operation will continue to run. if i click the OK below the message, my explorer will crash and immediately restore itself to the state before the error. this is weird as i would expect the problem to be something major and i wonder if anyone else have encounter this before?
