  1. Just wondering why so many of you people like mpeg1.

the only advantage I see for it is to make VCD for standalone players and it's univeral compatiablity.

personnally I really don't care as much for it as 2 years ago. MPEG1 is pretty old standard.

    Windows Media Encoder 7.1
and DivX captures offer better quality at same or smaller bitrates.

at VCD bitrate & resolution I get no blocks and very little compression artifact using WME or DivX. the sames clip I get noticable lower quality video using VCD/mpeg1 capture.

heck even the filesize is smaller using DIVX/WME

  2. Using your computer monitor to watch movies or video clips is good for people on a tight budget. Or on somekind of allowance? Kid's really.

Using a dvd player as the target platform gives you access to a much larger display on top of versatility. If you really can't stand vcd quality, try svcd.

  3. At the same resolution and bitrate MPEG1 looks the same as MPEG2. Video quaility wise there's no advantage to using MPEG2. And as you can encode MPEG1 faster, and more stand alones and all PCs support it by default, etc. etc. people still like MPEG1.

The advantage of MPEG2 is that it supports features that MPEG1 does not: interlacing, multiple angles, multiple audio tracks, selectable subtitles, etc.

As for DivX. You can only play DivX files on your PC. Believe it or not, not everyone wants to do this

i tried what you were saying about it being better at same bitrate and sorry but i would be wiping them glasses clean
Windows Media Encoder 7.1 better than mpeg
if that was really the case wouldnt everybody encode there files with it and would that not be the standard would we no see capture cards that encode straight to it instead of mpeg and if it was so much better wouldnt we be at wmehelp.com and lastly if it is so good why doesnt my stand alone read like this cd\vcd\svcd\dvd\mp3\wme why because it is just another crap microsoft product but then arent they all i have never seen artifacts or blocks on my vcds and i have encoded over a hundred vcds but looking at something encoded with wme looks like im looking at crap plain and simple who wants to watch it on a pc screen

  5. actually u can cap to WME and DivX in realtime using freevcr.

or course I pefer DivX over WME because of better quality and file smallersize.

I got TV out in my Video card and my DVD players can't read CDR.

just annoys me when I have to use multiple CDR just to store a capped movie. with DIVX I put a 2 hour movie in a single cd but of course slight lower video quality over VCD.

I guess it's a trade off depend what's important to you

anyway I use the PV233 to get sample VCD clips
and WinTV (older one with BT848 chip) to do my WME, DIVX caps. the the thing I notice is that there's alot less boxing and artifacts BUT the picture is a little more blurred (not really that much) than MPEG1.
