Hope it's OK to ask this question. If not please remove post.
I've been trying to rip a DVD that states on the DVD label "Copy Protection" and that no viewable copy can be made.
It's a DVD9, Dual Layer Single Sided Disc.
When I try to rip the files I get a CRC error. I've tried DVD Decrypter, ONES, CloneDVD DVD-cloner and even DVDShrink. With DVD Decrypter is fails at around 5% and by the looks of it the others progs also fail around about the same place.
I've checked the disc and there doesn't seem to be any scratches or finger marks and I've cleaned it thoroughly but all to no avail.
I've also tried both my burners-a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-108 Firmware v1.18 (that can handle dual layer) and LITE-On DVDRW LDW-851S Firmware GS0P.
I've read somewhere that some "Copy Protected" DVDs have a CRC error burned into the disc so that the ripping process fails. If that's the case with this one it's the first time I've come across it.
I've even followed the advice given by MOVIEGEEK i.e.
If you encounter an error while ripping with DVDDecrypter go to Tools->Settings and set Structure Protection Removal Method to Aggressive, then go to I/O tab and enable Ignore Read Errors.Setting Transfer Length to Manual/32KB might help.
If anyone can offer any help I'd be much obliged.

Make sure you are using the latest version of Decrypter. I have yet to find a video it couldn't handle, but they are probably out there.

I'm using v3.5.4.0 which it says is the latest version. I'm also using AnyDVD v5.2.4.1
Been looking through the following topic https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=260885 that deals with the type of error I'm getting but although I have the latest versions of both progs the rip has just failed with CloneDVD2 @ VTS_02_1.VOB 23 TCSectorReader. This is 5% mark.
Just tried DVD Decrypter and it fails at the same point.
Also followed a link in the topic that gave info on the earlier version of DVD Decrypter and PSL files but that says the latest version covers that so it shouldn't be an issue. Also just seen that DVD Decrypter is no longer being developed, what a great shame! Don't think there is anything else like it available.
Looks like I'll have to give up on this particular item. -
Usually, a CRC Error occurs when the disc is damaged/scratched. Does the dvd play fine on your PC from start to end without any pauses or glitches.

try using VOBBLANKER to rip to your hard drive first. if that fails as mentioned your disc maybe scratched. ask someone else to try ripping it in their dvdrom/dvd burner. i've had crc errors and my plextor 708a drive was able to read the disc that was badly scratched.

I would suggest giving the disk a careful polish (centre out, not around the disk), then using ISOBuster to try to salvage it.Read my blog here.

I now have a number VOB,IFO and BUP files and the folder size is 7.53GB so presumably the files are is still in the original dual-layer format.
What do I have to do now to create the backup DVD on a single sided disc??? Do I have to load the files into DVDShrink for example to reduce the size??
Thanks -
Yep. You now have choices. You can just shrink everything by the same amount to make it fit (not recommended), you can adjust the compression for individual items to give the most space to the main title (better), or reauthor and just put the main title on the disk. Many times you can avoid transcoding at all by doing this, as the main title with just one audio track can fit. At worst, generally you need very little extra compression going down this path.

May play around with the tracks further i.e run them through CloneDVD2 or one of my other burning s/w packages just to see what I can end up with.
Main thing is that thanks to all the help given here I'm at least able to get the main title backed up and I have added vobBlanker to my arsenal. Will have to spend some time looking at what vobBlanker can do or find a guide I can read through.
I may still take a look at ISO Buster just to see what that can do. -
Just a quick follow up question.
Anyone care to explain why vobBlanker ripped the DVD OK when everything else failed with CRC errors?
Thanks -
The weather, the way you held you were holding your mouth, the alignment of the stars . . .
Perhaps it ignores read-errors by default. I am trying it out on two particularly stubborn disks that I had given up hope on. Let's see what happens . . . .Read my blog here.

If this were my dvd, I would have returned it as defective and demanded a properly functioning replacement or my money back.
