  1. Next, RFontenot and other MMC Hacksters....!!!

As I was updating my Reg Tool for MMC 7.5 I decided to change some setting beyond that which the sofware says it supports. The key for CPU Load is the same as the "Motion Estimation Quality" - the values that can be set are between 0.0% and 100% (as allowed by the MMC 7.5 software). I decided to see what would happen when I asked the software to do more than 100% ... so I went into the registry and changed the key - the value for 100% is 1.0 - it's the CPU Load key. I put it to 1.5 (150%) and then tested it to see what would happen.

Let me give you a quick review of my system before I continue.... I don't have the most modern machine - PIII 450 - 256 meg of RAM. The best I can ever get out of my ATI is 352x240 -- anything more and I get frame loss.

Taking my standard custom 352x240 profile and upping the CPU Load to 150% (1.5) I was able to capture at 704x480 with ZERO frame loss!!! Now I did not change the resolution to 704x480 - I left it at 352x480 but changing the CPU Load to 1.5 (150%) did something to the settings --- capturing at 704x480 is IMPOSSIBLE on my computer but there it was - and not one frame dropped.

Can someone else try this and let me know what you find out - I might add a "turbo charge" button to my reg tool so you can input these 'unsupported' settings! I have a feeling that this isn't the only value you can change with dramatic results - I just haven't stumbled on to the next one yet but in due time!!

My goal is to be able to capture 352x480 without dropping frames - so if I can do 704x480 I would assume that by trial and error I can find the right combianation that will allow me to do 352x480 (I hope!)

Also I still need beta testers for the next version of my Reg Tool - and I would love to get feedback from anyone else on testing the values in MMC registry and what 'non-standard' values it will support!

Oh one last thing - by looking in my W2K task manager it seems that the higher you go in CPU Load value the more RAM it uses .. at 1.2 it was using 33meg and 1.5 it was using 38meg ... very cool!!!!

  2. Stinky,

Where in the registry do I change the value? I'll give it a try and let you know.

  3. I'll email you the beta of my MMC Reg Tool - you can change the CPU Load through it -- any value above 1.0 will give you those strange results - just select the "CPU Override" check box.

Let me know what you find out!

Stinky... I'm at steve@spectraservices.com if you can e-mail me that, it sounds really intriguing... wouldn't it be insteresting if all we needed to do is a reg patch and fix problems ATI can't! These "strange" results would solve most of my problems...

I've been resigned to capturing 480x480 Interlaced-only MPEG-2 with MMC 7.5, mainly bacause I make SVCD's out of them, and I can do IVTC on them afterwards... but I'd certainly want higher-res material if I could achieve it...

  6. Stinky - Fast work but my e-mail seems to be hosed. Have not been able to try it out. I too have had exceptional results with MMC 7.5. But I have found that you have to use the latest drivers for your respective card. If you do not use the latest drivers you can have macro block problems with mpeg2. Getting super results here. And NO A/V sync PROBLEMS!. Hopefully my e-mail will get fixed so I can try out your latest hack!

    next,

I think we went back and forth on this in another thead on MMC 7.5... and this is as we suspected... it DOES have to have the latest AIW Radeon drivers (which happen to be hacked or "leaked" versions). I noticed the block problem got better after that. I'm chomping at the bit to try this reg thing...

  8. homerpez - good to hear from you. Stinky writes great hacks. He's the one that got the real time AIW VCD captures going for compliant mpeg1 Nero burns 6 months ago. He's got LOTR lore and reputation around here as far as I'm concerned. Looking foward to his latest hack.
